Summer 2014
Region 11: Los Angeles County

Featured Summer Program: Heal the Bay's Watershed Education Program

Join with Heal the Bay and several other local environmental educators to discover how the Watersheds of Los Angeles can become an essential component of your Middle or High School Classroom! As schools and teachers prepare to transition to the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards, this three day professional development workshop will show teachers how various lessons in environmental health and function, citizen science and project based learning, supported by field trip explorations at local waterways throughout Los Angeles can bring the story of water and the community to life across various subjects. Participating teachers are encouraged to select the training nearest to their school (for the most relevant programming) and will explore several of these field sites first-hand over the course of the workshop. Additional, participating teachers will receive free curriculum to employ directly in their classroom, and have the opportunity to access available field trip resources from several local organizations.

Interested teachers are encouraged to register at HtbWatershedEd.eventbrite.com. Any questions, comments or issues should be directed at Edward Murphy, Emurphy@healthebay.org, 310.451.1500, x153.

Bring EEI To Your Students This Fall!

The Education and the Environment Initiative (EEI) is a free, state-sponsored K-12 curriculum that teaches science and history-social science standards through an environmental lens.

Environment-based instruction makes learning relevant and fun for students by engaging them in topics they care about - the air they breathe, the water they drink, and the food they eat. EEI helps students understand their relationship to the environment while preparing them to be critical thinkers and 21st century problem solvers.

Top 5 Reasons to Use EEI:

1. It's engaging.
2. Easy-to-use. 3. Supports Common Core.
4. Convenient training options.
5. It's free!
