Summer 2014 - Region 9a - San Diego and Imperial Counties

A message from your regional coordinator

Summer is here! Celebrate by enjoying San Diego’s many outdoor spaces! In between relaxing days at the beach, hikes at Torrey Pines, and excursions to the Cabrillo tide-pools, investigate the wonderful nature programs available for your classes. Our environmental educators are working hard at summer camps and planning great professional developments for the fall.
If you are an environmental educator in our region, don’t forget to join an NGSS work group as we continue to learn about the new standards and how we can best support them in our work with students!

Project Cornerstone Educates Students about Local Construction Aggregates Industry

Project Cornerstone, Inc. is a San Diego-based grassroots organization dedicated to educating the public about the importance of local construction aggregates (i.e., sand, gravel and crushed stone). The program aims to teach San Diego County students that local mineral resources, like construction aggregates, are an integral part of their daily lives - the highways they travel on, the schools they attend and the homes they live in. Aggregate is the essential raw material in all public works projects, including buildings, flood control bridges, roads, hospitals and all other infrastructure vital to communities.
The organization offers students a chance to see where sand, gravel and crushed stone are locally mined through a field trip to a local mining operation. While at the mine, students enjoy a hands-on activity designed to teach about the various mineral resources used in building our community’s infrastructure. They will also receive instruction on how mines are reclaimed for reuse in their communities after resource extraction is completed.
If teachers do not have the time to include a field trip, Project Cornerstone also offers in-class visits where the hands-on activity and a short presentation is provided.
The program supports Next Generation Science Standards. The Disciplinary Core Ideas are ESS3-A Natural Resources and ESS3-C Human Impacts on Earth Systems.
Cost: Free; teachers/parents are responsible for transportation costs on field trips
