Student Scientists and Conservationists at Lewis Middle School!

Daniel Lewis Middle School in Paso Robles was a awarded a $500 grant for
their successful completion of the US Green Building Council California Central Coast Chapter (USGBC-C4) Gateway to Green Schools program.

The middle school partnered with Cal Poly College of Architecture and Environmental Design students to complete the program.

As part of the project, students did audits on lighting, water and energy, finding ways to lower resource usage, save money and improve indoor environmental quality.

Student scientists implemented the following activities:
  • school-wide composting and recycling with presentations by PR Waste and IWMA and USGBCC4
  • stacking non-recyclable lunch trays to reduce waste volume
  • 10 lb/day worm composting to indoor bins and outdoor worm bed
  • designing and building solar ovens
  • raising mosquito fish
  • phenology studies with Journey North, and

Morro Bay Bird Festival - January 18 - 20, 2014 Morro Bay Community Center

Every Martin Luther King weekend over 450 birders visit Morro Bay, California (a Globally Important Bird Area) to view, photograph and learn more about birds. Morro Bay is located halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco on the Pacific Flyway. The area offers pristine beaches, beautiful state parks, an excellent natural history museum, panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, and best of all, thousands of birds. Over 200 species are usually sighted during the Festival weekend, with 211 counted in 2013!
