Winter 2013-2014 | CREEC Region 5 e-Newsletter
Monterey, San Benito, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz Counties
Coordinator's Message
Hello Region 5 subscriber!

Across the State, teachers are getting the message--from administrators, from businesses, from higher education--that STEM is a high priority. In November, Stanford University hosted a summit to share ideas about how to encourage students, especially underrepresented minorities, to pursue careers in STEM fields. According to Stanford President John Hennessy, the key is to first inspire students to dream, then help them learn by doing-then, they will embrace science, technology, engineering and math.

Environmental education programs are a perfect venue for opening up the world, literally and figuratively, for students.

Ask a scientist or engineer about how they got their start, and many will have very personal stories of open-ended youthful explorations of scientific phenomena that motivated them to delve deeper into STEM fields. We can help guide students toward these
opportunities for inspiration.

This newsletter highlights local opportunities for students to engage. Learn to collect data. Train as an interpreter. Engage people with an environmental theme through the arts. Please share these opportunities with your students and you could send them on a journey to their dreams.

And be sure to give yourself opportunities for inspiration, too. Check out workshops, events and resources below, and visit creec.org to find many more. Sweet dreaming!

Best Wishes this Holiday Season!
