Winter 2013 | North Coast CREEC e-Newsletter
Humboldt, Del Norte, Lake, Mendocino, and Sonoma Counties
Message from your Region 1 Coordinators:

Season's Greetings!

North Coast CREEC warmly welcomes you to our new newsletter format, which makes it easy to manage your subscription information and share with colleagues.

2014 promises to be an exciting year for environmental education in California.  The California Department of Education's CREEC Network has introduced the all-new CREEC.org, completely re-tooled with new features, and is in the process of updating all information in the Resource Directory!

We also welcome Laura Powell to Humboldt State University's Redwood Science Project Team as the CREEC Co-coordinator for the southern portion of our North Coast region! Laura brings with her a wealth of EE experience she gained as the Bay Area CREEC Coordinator for many years.

What does all this mean for the North Coast?

If you are a Teacher, you'll want to use the new site to find programs, EE activities, exhibits and events in our region and across the state, searching by grade, topic, EEI unit or even content standard. You'll also want to reach out to your coordinator to help you with bringing EE to your school.

If you are an EE PROVIDER, be sure your organization has created a master account on the site, where your staff can log in to post your programs, resources, video and more, so teachers can find them. There's even an illustrated provider guide to walk you through the easy process! Your coordinators are ready to help you engage with CREEC.

No matter what your interest in EE, you will want to bookmark the Events Calendar so you can stay
informed of great events and happenings.

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season!

EEI Curriculum Training Available

This will be a great year for environmental education. The EEI (Education and the Environment Initiative) is now correlated to Common Core Standards and Next Generation Science Standard correlation is coming soon. It is exciting to have such a wonderful tool for teaching standards to mastery using the environment as the context for learning. Email Allison or Laura to find out about a presentation for your school, district, or organization to help you use this valuable tool. Free printed units are available for your classroom through your participation in a training session.

New "Quests" created throughout North Coast

In a Quest, educational and illustrative clues lead participants through a landscape, with the travelers learning about the ecology, history and other interesting facts relevant to the area. These are fun, educational experiences for both classrooms and families. Find a Quest near you today on the North Coast Quests provider page!

The Redwood EdVentures Quest program is a collaborative project administered by Humboldt County Office of Education's Redwood EdVentures along with the partners CA State Parks, and the Redwood National and State Parks. The Quest is an interactive treasure hunt along the trails of seven North Coast Redwoods National and State Parks. From Jedediah Smith State Park, down to Richardson Grove, families and classrooms can Quest and learn about our Northcoast Redwood region. In this collection of Quests, participants are led to a final clue, which is then given to the ranger or other staff upon the Questers return to the visitor's center. In exchange for the clue, participants are rewarded with a unique Quest patch, representative of the park!

Humboldt classes to create new Quests with grant funding.  Through a Children's Forest grant with Six Rivers National Forests, "Rivers to Redwoods Children's Forest" is one of two grants funded across the nation, and joins 25 other Children's Forests.  Administered through Six Rivers National Forest, HCOE is partnering with California North Coast Redwoods State Parks and Bureau of Land Management to develop an additional set of Quests with the help of school children in Eastern Humboldt that focus on Six Rivers National Forest lands. Quests that were created in Arcata Community Forest, Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary, Headwaters Forest Reserve and Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Sanctuary are also being recreated and added to Redwood EdVentures so that Quest participants can get a specially designed patch for these additional quests.  Find Quest maps and lots more information in the North Coast Quest listings on CREEC!
