Issue No. 35

GRADUATION 2016
-Mary Augustinovich

The PACE Academy graduation ceremony will be on Thursday, May 26, 2016, from 6:00pm to 7:00pm at
the PACE Academy campus in Prescott Valley.

Graduates need to arrive at 5:30pm and the doors will
open at 5:30pm for guests as well. The number of guests for each graduate will not be limited, nor will
we be issuing reserved seating as seats will be available on a "first come, first served" basis. A light
refreshment of water and cookies will be served to all guests and graduates after the ceremony.

PACE Academy will provide the cap and gown for students to wear, and these will need to be returned
after the ceremony. Students should wear school appropriate clothing under the graduation gown, and
because students must climb up and down a few stairs to receive their diplomas, sensible shoes are
encouraged. If you have any questions prior to the ceremony, please call the school.

This is an exciting time for all of our graduates and their families. All of our graduating seniors have
worked hard and most of them have overcome many obstacles to get to this point.
PACE Students Take
Student ASVAB
-Robin Lucas (photos)

PACE Academy had the privilege of hosting the Student ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) assessment on MAY 2nd for any eligible PACE students interested in participating. The Student ASVAB is a multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military; and is a useful tool in career planning after high school graduation. The Student ASVAB is given at no cost to students and is administered on campus during the regular school day.

Two weeks before PACE hosted the ASVAB, U.S. Army Recruiter Sergeant Brittany Buchanan, along with her team, held an informational assembly for the PACE student body. The Army recruiters gave a Powerpoint presentation specific to  enlistment in the U.S. Army. They fielded  questions from the students concerning career and education opportunities offered through U.S. military service. The Student ASVAB is one of the first steps to assessing one's eligibility for military service.

We thank Sergeant Buchanan and the recruiters from the Prescott based Army Recruiting Center first for their service to our country, and for speaking to the PACE students  about  options for their future after high school.

HOW TO SPOT AN IRS SCAM
- submitted by Marc Sterling,
Sterling Financial Services

The IRS regularly warns the public about telephone scams and provides tell-tale warning signs to tip you off if you get such a call. These callers claim to be with the IRS. Scammers usually demand you send money to pay your taxes immediately. Some may try to con you by saying that you're due a refund. The refund is a fake lure so you'll give them your banking or other private financial information.
These con artists can sound convincing when they call. They may even know quote a bit about you. The are able to alter the caller ID so it looks like the IRS is calling. They use fake names and bogus IRS badge numbers. If you don't answer, they often leave an "urgent" callback requests.
The IRS respects taxpayer rights when working out payment of your taxes. So, it's pretty easy to tell when a supposed IRS caller is bogus. Any one of these things is a tell-tale sign of a scam. The IRS does not:
  1. Call demanding payment. They will not call about taxes you owe without first mailing you an actual bill.
  2. Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the chance to question or appeal the amount owed.
  3. Require you to use a certain payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.
  4. Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
  5. Threaten to bring in local law-enforcement to arrested you for not paying.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and asking for money, here's what to do:
  • If you know you owe taxes or think you might owe, call the IRS at 800-829-1040 to talk about payment options. You also might be able to set up a payment plan online if you meet the IRS' criteria.
  • If you have no reason to believe that you owe taxes, report the incident to TIGTA at 800-366-4484 or at www.tigta.gov.
  • If a scammer targeted you by phone, also contact the Federal Trade Commission by using their Complaint Assistant to report the scam. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments section of your complaint.
The IRS does not currently send unsolicited email, text messages or utilize social media to discuss your personal tax issues. For more information on reporting tax scams, go to www.irs.gov and type "scam" in the search box.

PACE Re-Enrollment
 - Becki Davis

Just a friendly reminder that all current PACE students who are planning to attend the 2016/2017 school year, need to fill out a yellow re-enrollment form. Students can pick up these forms from the registrar, Ms. Torey, during the school day. The re-enrollment packets can also be downloaded from the PACE Academy enrollment options on the school website. Please be sure to include an updated proof of residency and copies of any supporting documents requested. Any student who returns the completed re-enrollment packet by May 19th, will receive two (2) free movie passes to Harkins Theaters.
PACE also has enrollment incentives for new referrals from current attendees. If you refer a new student to PACE, and they stay past the 100th day of school, you both receive a $100 gift card.

We hope everyone has a fantastic summer, and look forward to seeing you all next school year.

Adopt A Classroom
-Adam Young

You've probably seen the blue signs on I-17 on the side of the road when driving down to Phoenix. "Adopt a Highway." But did you know that you can also adopt a classroom? Adopt A Classroom is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to "support student success by empowering teachers with the funds they need to purchase classroom supplies." Teachers and schools can sign up on their website and post information about their classrooms. Donors can then search the organization's national database to find a classroom that they want to support financially. Adopt a Classroom describes it this way:

When a classroom receives a donation, funds are immediately made available to the teacher through an online credit. Teachers can use those funds to shop online for classroom supplies from a network of more than 40 vendors on AdoptAClassroom.org; the supplies they choose are delivered directly to the teacher's school. Donors receive personal feedback from the teacher about the impact of their donation, including an impact report that details how their contributions were used, item-by-item, dollar-for-dollar.

Since 1998, AdoptAClassroom.org has raised more than $28 million to help teachers purchase school supplies for more than 2 million students. To date, more than 209,000 K-12 teachers have registered with the organization.

If you would like to help PACE Academy or another school, please visit AdoptAClassroom.org and click on "Find a Classroom." Enter the school name (just type "Pace" OR "Pace Preparatory Academy") or teacher name (i.e. Adam Young), city and state and the website will give you a list of participating classrooms. Click on the one you want to support and the amount you wish to donate. It's that simple!

One great thing about PACE Academy is that PACE is a Google Apps for Education School. Our students have an array of productivity apps made by Google, managed by PACE, and delivered to the students through our super fast wireless network.

Apps the students use everyday such as Chrome, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Gmail, are easily accessible from any device with internet access. Students can and are encouraged to work from home as well as at school. With Google, all work stays synced across devices and collaborating on group projects has never been easier!

On campus, PACE students also get to enjoy using new technology while learning. Each and every student has their own Chromebook assigned to them. Students never have to wait for a computer to free up or have to deal with the frustrations of using old, outdated machines.

Google Apps for Education and Chromebooks are the perfect pair for educational success at PACE Academy and give our students experience everyday in using technology.

JOB CORPS Presentation at PACE
-Robin Lucas

Earlier this Spring, Shelby Hubbard, Outreach & Admissions Specialist with Job Corps, shared a presentation with PACE students.  Job Corps is a federally-funded comprehensive program through the Federal Department of Labor that  provides career skills training for young people ages 16 through 24. Job Corps offers programs that teach young people specific skills that employers look for when hiring new employees. In addition to training, Job Corps students receive free housing, meals, basic health care, and a living allowance twice a month; all paid for by the Federal Dept of Labor.

Ms. Hubbard was a wealth of information concerning requirements for enrollment, different types of career training offered, as well as describing student life on the Job Corps campus. Due to heightened student interest, Ms.Hubbard lingered after the presentation to speak with students individually.  Our thanks to Ms. Hubbard for traveling from Phoenix to spend the afternoon at PACE.
If you would like to know more about the Job Corps program, you can log on to the national website http://www.jobcorps.gov  .  Ms. Hubbard can be contacted directly at Job Corps/Phoenix
