El Futuro Update
September 2014

Creer y Crecer

We celebrate a young woman who has been coming to El Futuro over the last year. When she first came she exuded anxiety and fear, cried constantly and was unable to talk to anyone. Last week she was so excited to tell of the award she got at work for being the top worker at the factory. For that she won a gift card to a restaurant and was able to take several members of her extended family out for lunch. She felt so proud. She talks of how she used to not believe (creer) in herself. But she now feels like a completely different person! One other celebration has been her newfound joy of working in her flower garden with her sister. She smiles when she talks of how the little plants grow like her confidence has grown - (crecer).

The Learning Trail Leads to Great Work!

Mimi Chapman is a good friend and mentor and collaborator with El Futuro.  She wrote this blog post about how we are partnering with the UNC School of Social Work and an energized group of volunteers to help children and families in North Chatham County!  Here's a video talking about what we did over the summer developing the work.

CELEBRATIONS!

Ale celebrates a young boy and his family.  He was diagnosed with ADHD and referred to El Futuro. When the family first came to us, he was aggressive, would run away from his family and they felt embarrassed to have friends over to their home because of his behaviors. Over the course of treatment here, the family has learned and implemented many tools and techniques to help him better manage his impulsivity. Both parents have taken a more active parenting role with him. They now actually enjoy spending time with him and feel confident and reassured when taking him out!

Roberto celebrates a woman who came to El Futuro several years ago with severe recurrent depression that had worsened after the birth of her child. She had major conflict with her spouse and her oldest child was having problems at school. Through treatment, she is now controlling her depression and feels very confident as a mother. Her daughter no longer has behavior problems and is doing well at school. And her relationship with her spouse is one of mutual support. At appointments now she smiles and laughs and plays with her youngest daughter in a loving way.
