Welcome to the third installment of the Advantage Academy-Grand Prairie online newsletter. This edition of the newsletter will be for December and January. This newsletter is published the first week of each month and we hope you will find this style of communication to be a positive step in keeping you informed of what is happening in our school while conserving resources at the same time. Our online newsletter will save our school approximately 5,000 sheets of paper each month and hopefully makes it easier for you to have the information you need right at your fingertips when you are ready to access it. Be sure to share the news with other parents and help us spread the word! Thank you for your support in helping make our campus the best that it can be! |
Principal's Podium A message from H. Fitzpatrick, Principal Greetings Parents and Students, It is hard to believe that it is already December and Christmas is upon us. This is a busy month for the school with lots of activities going on, but we must keep our focus and not forget about the primary objective to embrace academic excellence and continue to support our vision of building champions.
Parents, I want to thank you for being involved in your child's academic growth and development. It is only through our partnership that we can achieve the desired results for our students. Furthermore, it's my desire and goal along with our faculty and staff to make our school, Advantage Academy-Grand Prairie, an exemplary school, one that we can all be proud of and one that continues to "Build Champions with a Future and a Hope."
Once again, thank you for your partnership and support! Have a Merry and Blessed Holiday!
H. Fitzpatrick, Principal |
Academic Notes Dr. J. Horn, Assistant Principal Dear Parents and Students,
With Fall in full swing, the Grand Prairie campus is a flurry of activities. Boys and girls basketball have begun with two strong teams representing Advantage Academy. The Jr. High and High School Robotics teams are diligently working on their projects in preparation for upcoming competitions. Teachers have the students actively engaged in their classrooms and are providing after school tutoring and extended study hall for those needing a little extra help. The annual food drive was incredibly successful, with approximately 2,000 items of food being collected for those less fortunate during Thanksgiving. Our annual Thanksgiving luncheon took place on November 15, 2012, where we had more than 100 parents come to each lunch with their children.
The District's College and Career Fair took place on November 15th at our campus. This was an opportunity for the Waxahachie and Grand Prairie students to visit with representatives from approximately 40 different colleges and universities and they were able to learn about admission requirements as well as financial aid opportunities for the schools. The week after Thanksgiving, November 26-30th, our campus held its annual Scholastic book fair. Students were given the opportunity to browse through a large selection of books and accessories and purchase whatever they wanted by the end of the week.
As we approach Christmas, the activities continue! Community-Parent Partner day will take place on campus on December 20th and our class Christmas parties will take place on December 20th, as early as 1:45. Contact your child's teacher for exact details.
As we go our separate ways for the Christmas Holidays to spend time with our family and friends, please be mindful of the reason for the season and take extra care if you are traveling for the holidays. Be safe and blessed until we see you again in the new year!
Sincerely,
Dr. J. Horn |

The Safety Zone
A. Amaro, District Student Safety Director

I would like to thank all of the staff, faculty, and parents for following the traffic flow and speed limit within the school parking lot. I know that it hasn't been easy, but we have all adjusted well and are doing an excellent job. Here are some things to remember: - Inside lane is used for drop off only and the outside lane is for thru-traffic
- Speed limit is 5mph
- Afternoon pickup can begin to line up no earlier than 2:30pm
- Outside lane will be used only during pickup to expedite the traffic flow when designated by school staff only
- Anyone picking up a student in PreK-5th must have a pickup card. If not, you must go to the office and present your ID to the staff
- Do NOT drop off in the outside lane for safety reasons
- Please sign in/out at the front office anytime you wish to be on campus
- Do not enter any building without the office-issued visitor's badge
Students left unattended, or who have not been picked up after 3:45 pm (Elementary), 4:00 pm (Secondary) and 4:15 pm (on tutoring days), the Student Safety Director will notify the local authorities to pursue action against you regarding leaving your child unattended. Please know that we do understand that there may be emergencies from time to time, and when that happens, you need to notify the front office as soon as possible.
These are rules set up for the safety and security of every student, staff and faculty member. Please continue to follow all posted signs and if you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me at 214-451-2126. Thanks, A. Amaro |

- Head coverings
- Pants instead of shorts

Also - flu season is here. If your child is running a fever (even a low grade temperature) or severe coughing, vomiting or green mucus, please do NOT send your child to school as these germs will spread to others and make them sick as well. Keep you child home if he or she is sick.
While at school, remind your child to:

Cool Character Captions
by M. Martinez, Elementary Coordinator
November brought an "attitude of gratitude" throughout the campus which was demonstrated through our giving spirits. We had the greatest response ever for our Fall Food Drive. Canned goods poured in and so many were blessed by your big-hearted giving. The food pantry and church to which we donated the food to were overcome with gratitude because of your generosity. We want to build and instill in our students the spirit of giving and caring for those less fortunate. Giving is a tangible way to demonstrate love to others. Thank yo uall very much for caring and giving spirit.
During the Book Fair, I witnessed students lending change to their friends so they could purchase a book because they were missing some change for the tax. Others bought books for their siblings so they could surprise them with a gift. Many bought Christmas presents for others as well. I was truly impressed with the "spirit of giving" demonstrated last week here on our campus.
December is also our annual "Rachel's Challenge Toy Drive". If you are able to send a new toy with your student, we will be collecting them through December 14th. At that time, we will gather all of the collected toys and take them to a WFAA/Rachel's Challenge drop-off location for distribution. Please do not wrap the new toy because they will need to see what age the toy would be most appropriate for and whether the toy would go to a boy or girl or either. Thank you in advance for your support of this project.
We cannot stress enough that "compassion is the greatest form of love humans have to offer."
"Kind words are the gardens, kind words are the roots, kind words are the flowers, kind deeds are the fruits. Take care of your garden and keep out the weeds. Fill it with sunshine, kind words and kind deeds" - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Poet
The month of December brings cheer and joyful giving as well.
Our students did such a wonderful job in collecting canned food and non-perishable food items! Here a few images to show just how generous our students and families are!
  | | approximately 2,000 food items donated! |

The Elementary Spotlight
The Grand Prairie Elementary Spotlight is on....Maggie Sengele
Mrs. Sengele is an Advantage Academy-Grand Prairie fourth grade teacher. She teaches Math, Math Enrichment, and Art. Mrs. Sengele is a graduate of Texas A&M San Antonio with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on Special Education. Mrs. Sengele has two 10 year old children (not twins) and married her best friend in Vegas two years ago with Elvis as their witness. She has two amazing German Shepherds and more fish than any family should ever have. Mrs. Sengele enjoys wood working in her spare time and enjoys family nights at Buffalo Wild Wings as well as the double features at the Galaxy Drive-In. Her favorite restaurant is the Twisted Root in Deep Ellum.
Something most people do not know about Mrs. Sengele is that if her son had not been born with Autism, she would have become a flight attendant instead of a teacher. She is looking forward to her grandmother's cooking over the holiday break and says she feels grateful everyday that she has been blessed with the opportunity to work at AA-GP, helping to make a positive difference in the community and to meet and form relationships with her colleagues, administrators and student's parents.

The Middle School Spotlight
The Grand Prairie Middle School Spotlight is on.........Seth Folkenroth!
Mr. Folkenroth teaches World, Texas and American Social Studies to the middle school students of Advantage Academy-Grand Prairie. This is Mr. Folkenroth's first year at AA-GP and he says he loves that he gets to teach three very different sections of social studies and that originally being form Pennsylvania, he is getting to LEARN Texas history as he teaches it. He also states that Texas history is a lot more interesting than Pennsylvanian history because their are wars in Texas history which is much more exciting than PA history which is full of Quakers and Amish history! Mr. Fokenroth is proud to have 187 teenage kids - all of his students at AA-GP. He also has a German Shepherd named Ava that is living with his mom in Pennsylvania and he is hoping to move Ava to Texas soon.
Mr. Folkenroth graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelors in History and Political Science with a Certificate in Latin American Studies. In his spare time, he likes to travel. He spent a summer in Argentina doing an independent research project during college and wants to go back - the steak in Argentina is second to none. He loves the Chipotle restaurant and could eat it for every meal. One thing that no one knows about Mr. Folkenroth, until now, is that he used to be the Director of Recruitment, Hiring and Training ant the University of Pittsburgh. His job was to recruit, hire and teach all of the new tour guides how to give excellent tours of Pitt.
Mr. Folkenroth enjoys the sense of community at AA-GP, especially in the middle school. The middle school group has given him so much great advice and support and says he really appreciates all of their kindness and generousity. During the holidays, he is looking forward to spending some time with his family, and his dog, as well as being able to being able to see friends he hasn't seen since college graduation because they have been working in Europe for the past 6 months.

Rachel's Challenge Annual Toy Drive
Bringing Christmas to those less fortunate
The students of Advantage Academy are being asked to help make a difference this holiday season by donating a new toy by December 14th. All donations will be taken to a WFFA/Rachel's Challenge official drop off where they will be sorted and wrapped for a child who is less fortunate. Please do not wrap the gifts and the volunteers will need to see the toy to know how to sort it and distribute it to. Your generous support is greatly appreciated as we are teaching our children the importance of having a giving spirit. |

Positive Study Habits
Organize with Color!
Devise your own color-coding system to keep your assignments and your thoughts organized. You may select a single color for each class (like science or history) and use that color for your folder, your highlighters, your sticky notes, and your pens. You'll be surprised to discover how much strong organization skills can change your life!
Color-coding is also a tool to use when conducting research. For example, you should always keep several colors of sticky flags on hand when you're reading a book for school. Assign a specific color the every topic of interest. Place a flag on a page containing information you will need to study or to cite. It works like magic!

Fall Scholastic Book Fair
Advantage Academy-GP students getting into their books!
During the week of November 26th to November 30th, we held a Scholastic Book Fair and it was tremendously successful! The kids are still asking when it will be back! Our staff and faculty enjoyed shopping at the book fair as well. Many of our staff and faculty members also volunteered their free time to assist the students in the book fair. Not only did our students have the chance to select and purchase new books, they learned valuable lessons about managing their money, having to pay sales tax, and budgeting. We saw a large amount of generosity within our student body and students helped other students by paying the balance on an order, helping a friend with the sales tax and purchasing gifts for other people for Christmas. We look forward to possible having a second book fair in the spring.
