Welcome to the second installment of the Advantage Academy-Grand Prairie online newsletter. This newsletter is published the first week of each month and we hope you will find this style of communication to be a positive step in keeping you informed of what is happening in our school while conserving resources at the same time. Our online newsletter will save our school approximately 5,000 sheets of paper each month and hopefully makes it easier for you to have the information you need right at your fingertips when you are ready to access it. Be sure to share the news with other parents and help us spread the word! Thank you for your support in helping make our campus the best that it can be! |
Principal's Podium A message from H. Fitzpatrick, Principal Greetings Parents,
It's hard to believe that two months have gone by in our school year. We just completed our first 9 weeks grading period and report cards were distributed on November 2. Parents, I need your support in making sure that students with grades of 74% or below attend after school tutorials. Remember "Failure is not an option." Parents and students I need your cooperation in the following areas: - STUDENTS meet state and local compulsory attendance requirements and arrive at school and to all classes on time.
- PARENTS ensure that child(ren) attend school daily and arrive and depart in a timely manner.
- STUDENTS maintain a 70 or higher grade in all subjects and complete all class activities and homework assignments.
- PARENTS respond appropriately to communication from the school and attend all required parent/teacher/principal conferences.
- STUDENTS attend tutorials and required Saturday School classes.
- PARENTS support child(ren) in their efforts to prepare and pass all classroom and state mandated exams.
Students and parents, we have so many things to be thankful for as the Thanksgiving holidays approach. Thank you parents for allowing Advantage Academy to educate your kids. Thank you to our teachers and staff for your amazing work ethic and commitment to our children. Thank you to the students for making AA-GP the wonderful school that it is! Thank you, Mrs. McDonald and the Central Office Administrative staff for your support and thank you for your commitment to building a new campus that will be enjoyed by all for generations to come. Parents, I look forward to seeing you on November 15 for our special Thanksgiving luncheon! Happy Thanksgiving, H. Fitzpatrick, Principal |
Academic Notes Dr. J. Horn, Assistant Principal Dear Parents and Students,
Happy Fall to all!! As this year continues to move along at a rapid pace, please be aware that state testing is never far away. We just concluded the senior TAKS retesting and are now starting to prepare for the STAAR-EOC retesting for sophomores which will take place the week of December 3rd.
Our hope is that students enjoy coming to school, have fun learning, and being with their friends while understanding that the ultimate goal is for them to demonstrate mastery in all of their subjects and on the state assessments. Doing so ensures they are prepared academically for the next grade level.
As a campus, we are all committed to help each and every student reach their fullest potential. All a student, or a parent, has to do when he/she has a question or concern is contact the teachers or administrators. We will be glad to help in any way we can!
Sincerely,
Dr. J. Horn |

The Safety Zone
A. Amaro, District Student Safety Director

I would like to thank all of the staff, faculty, and parents for following the traffic flow and speed limit within the school parking lot. I know that it hasn't been easy, but we have all adjusted well and are doing an excellent job. Here are some things to remember: - Inside lane is used for drop off only and the outside lane is for thru-traffic
- Speed limit is 5mph
- Afternoon pickup can begin to line up no earlier than 2:30pm
- Outside lane will be used only during pickup to expedite the traffic flow when designated by school staff only
- Anyone picking up a student in PreK-5th must have a pickup card. If not, you must go to the office and present your ID to the staff
- Do NOT drop off in the outside lane for safety reasons
- Please sign in/out at the front office anytime you wish to be on campus
- Do not enter any building without the office-issued visitor's badge
Students left unattended, or who have not been picked up after 3:45 pm (Elementary), 4:00 pm (Secondary) and 4:15 pm (on tutoring days), the Student Safety Director will notify the local authorities to pursue action against you regarding leaving your child unattended. Please know that we do understand that there may be emergencies from time to time, and when that happens, you need to notify the front office as soon as possible.
These are rules set up for the safety and security of every student, staff and faculty member. Please continue to follow all posted signs and if you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me at 214-451-2126. Thanks, A. Amaro |

Cool Character Captions
by M. Martinez, Elementary Coordinator
During the month of October the emphasis has been on Drug Awareness and Prevention. We desire to build the whole individual, guiding and teaching the students how to make good choices for life. When peer pressure comes, the students will have the tools to stand against negative influences and choose to walk away. Seek out positive relationships and make a difference in their school, community, and home.
Officer David Deck, from the Grand Prairie Police Department, visited our elementary assembly and shared several safety tips and talked to our students about how having good character builds integrity into their lives.
Our middle school and high school students learned what with every choice there is a consequence. So it is very important to consider your actions and decisions.
The Friends of Rachel Club (FOR) will begin a Fall Food Drive which will benefit local food pantries on November 1st - 15th.
"Integrity is what we say, what we do, and what we say we do" - Don Galer
We have two students that are Good Character Candidates for October:
Mario Rubio and Messiah Bennett, both in Ms. Powell's Second Grade Class.
On separate occasions, each boy found money on our campus and turned it in to our staff. The boys were recognized during our October Character Rally and were presented with a certificate by Officer David Deck from the Grand Prairie Police Department:

The Elementary Spotlight
The Grand Prairie Elementary Spotlight is on....Jennifer Powell!
Mrs. Powell is a second grade teacher at Advantage Academy-Grand Prairie. Mrs. Powell, a graduate of SAGU in Waxahachie, has been married just over 2 years and has two wonderful dogs named Jack and Autumn. She has one older brother and her parents live nearby and she is lucky to be able to hang out with them each week. When asked what she loves about Advantage Academy, Mrs. Powell said she absolutely loves her kiddos and the people she works with as well. While she says she loves all Chinese and Italian foods, P.F. Changs is her favorite! Her hobbies are decorating her house and hanging out with her husband and family. She is going to Uganda and Rwanda this summer and hopes one day to run in a marathon. Congratulations Mrs. Powell for being selected as a spotlight teacher!

The Middle School Spotlight
The Grand Prairie Middle School Spotlight is on..........Sandrella Bush!
Mrs. Bush teaches Middle School English-Language Arts and has 120 children - her students! She is married to her best friend, Ebon Bush. She graduated from Northwestern State University with her Bachelor of English Education and Communications degree in 2009. She enjoys her students and their diversity in who they are and where they come and states that she relates to students well because she remembers how it felt to be one of them. Mrs. Bush loves to listen to old music because it is her way of connecting to the past. In the past, she taught high school and was told that she has way too much energy for high school! When she moved to Texas, the position for Middle School ELA teacher was offered to her and she said that one thing she has learned is that you have to be a special person to work with this age group and she considers herself special and a little crazy! Mrs. Bush loves to sleep, write music and poetry, create video productions for her church and sing when no one is around. She enjoys snacking on dry cheerios and eating at Razzoo's Cajun restaurant. Congratulations to our special middle school ELA teacher - Mrs. Bush!

The High School Spotlight
The Grand Prairie High School Spotlight is on.....Brittney Conine!
Ms. Conine teaches High School Geometry, Calculus and Math Models as well as coaching our girls Varsity Volleyball team. A graduate of the U.T. Austin, Ms. Conine chose to teach high school is because she loves how at this age the students are starting to know who they are as individuals. They are beginning to identify with themselves and starting to make personal goals for their future. While Ms. Conine is a Texas native, she just moved here from California where she taught high school Science in Oakland. Ms. Conine loves past and bread and anything to do with Italian food. She loves being outside and playing sports. She is currently training for a half-marathon that she is going to run the beginning of December. She enjoys crafting as well and has two older brothers and one younger sister. Her favorite thing about Advantage Academy-Grand Prairie is that so many of the students are very helpful and eager to lend a helping hand to fellow classmates and teachers. It excites her to know that we have a campus full of generous and kind students. She also loves coaching and really enjoyed coaching the girls volleyball team this year. The girls really pushed themselves in two main areas: volleyball skill and character. We worked hard on improving our teamwork and work ethic, and the girls did a great job!

Produce Drop
A new program at AAGP
North Texas Food Bank started a pilot program with DISD last year and extended it to Advantage Academy this year. They only have 30 schools in the area that are on this program and we were able to get on. YEAH!!!! This is not a program for under privileged kids, this is a program to educate our younger generation the importance of good nutrition with fruits and vegetables. Our PE/Heath Teachers are excited about this program since they try to educate the students about nutrition every month.
On October 24th all of our elementary students who were present received a 5 pound bag of oranges. This month, our produce drop is scheduled to arrive on November 28th and we can't wait to see what the bags will hold this time!

Positive Study Habits
Ways to make school easier for you!
Every successful relationship is built upon clear communication. A student-teacher relationship is no different. Miscommunication is another factor that can cause bad grades, despite good efforts on your part. At the end of the day, make sure you understand every assignment that's expected of you.
Be sure to ask questions and find out what format you should use when you write a paper or what type of questions might appear on your exam. The more questions you ask, the more prepared you'll be.

Infinite Eagles Robotics From a Student's Point of View by Maria Contreras, 8th Grade
Usually when people think of Robotics Club, they think of nerds with robots - not true. Our Robotics Team is full of awesome people who joined the team for their own reasons. People like Mayra, Vivian, Cody, Jonathon, and Victoria thought it would be fun to join and hand out with their friends. Mary, Kennedy, Gabriel, Essence and Emmanuel all said it would be a good start for their education in the future.
Hear what they have to say:
"I thought it would be fun to learn something new and to build something, because I love to build things. When I first heard about Robotics Club, I thought, Hey, I love robots and I've never been in a club before so maybe it'll be fun and cool." - Mayra Ramirez
"I joined Robotics to learn how to build my own gadgets. In the future, I want to become an engineer and to fix cars. This seems like a good start." - Emmanuel Ramirez
"Robotics is fun, educational, and entertaining. That is why I wanted to join!" - Kennedy Gardner
The Infinite Eagles Robotics club is currently meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Their first competition is scheduled for December 8th. The club sponsors are Mr. Richart and Ms. Burns. |
