What is PCCAPS?

New to Park City High School, the Park City Center for Advanced Professional Studies (PCCAPS) gives juniors and seniors the insider's view of careers in their area of interest and helps them develop skills they need to succeed in the 21st century global workforce. PCCAPS courses allow students to interface with professionals in the "real" world, completing real projects and making real contributions. They are not internships or vocational tech classes. PCEF gave seed money to help get the program started.

Courses in Business, Engineering, Software Development, Digital Design and Teacher Ed are taught off campus in Park City area. Courses are 2 periods back to back (all morning or all afternoon) and provide 1.0 CTE credit. In many cases college credit is available as well. Projects are assigned to teams of 2-3 students, who will be working with businesses such as Adobe, Overstock.com, Backcountry.com, Zions Bank, L-3, Rockwell Collins, Electronic Arts, Montage Deer Valley, Resorts West, RAMP Sports, BoardDocs, Enhanced Clean Fuels, and many more.

Sample projects might include:

  1. A local inventor has figured out how to manufacture his product but doesn't have a marketing plan. Students will create a marketing strategy as well as design and develop a mobile app to run on iPhones and Androids and create an e-commerce website.
  2. A local resort is adding an ice-skating rink on property. Students will complete a series of designs and go through several rounds of client presentations.
  3. Analyze and streamline the manufacturing process of a winter sports equipment maker.  This involves participating in the design, product development and manufacturing phases then measuring the financial impact on their client.

Teacher Spotlight

Susan Graves-Henneman

Susan is a Physical Education teacher in her 21st year at Treasure Mountain Jr. High. She moved to Park City in 1989 after college, thinking she would ski bum for one season. Like many others, she never left! Her mom was a 4th grade teacher, and Susan decided that teaching was the path she would follow.

While getting her teaching degree from Westminster, she student taught in Park City, and then got a long-term sub position here. "I was lucky enough to get a full-time position at Treasure, and I've been here ever since! I'm the most senior teacher here. I have taught every subject but math, and then, when we switched to a junior high, I decided to teach P.E. and Health."

"I love being with this age group. They're starting to show their independence and push their boundaries, which are admirable characteristics. And in P.E. they don't have to rein it in. I feel it's important to give kids this age constant encouragement, and expose them to lots of activities so they will be lifetime participants. I also enjoy using my classroom teaching background when teaching healthy lifestyles and good nutrition."

Susan loves to telemark ski, mountain bike, and road bike with her husband and 10th grade daughter. She also loves to cook. "If you didn't have to be inside a dark studio all day, I might've been a food stylist!"

The best part of being a teacher? "I love seeing a different side to kids than their classroom teacher might see. I love seeing kids show their strengths in different areas."
