Survival Stories
3 Women, 3 Stores and lives saved!
I was protected by a gun, that I thought I didn't need, but was made to carry by my husband. I worked in the city and traveled 37 miles each way from home. I was picking up one of my employees at his apartment complex while his vehicle was in the shop. One morning around 6 a.m., it was still dark when I pulled into his complex. I pulled in directly in front of the guard house and turned around facing the street. As I waited for him, I noticed a truck parked across the street on the island. A person got out and ran across the road directly to my car (which was a vw by the way). It was cold so I had the windows rolled up and I always locked the doors so I didn't think anything of this person at first. When he reached my vehicle he stopped and punched the driver's side window and yelled at me to put the window down. I was shocked at first and just sat there. He punched the window again. Continued punching and then started going to the back of the car, punched the back window, all the while shouting for me to roll the window down. (Meanwhile the guard in the gatehouse did nothing) When he went to the passenger side of the vehicle and started punching the window, I realized I had taken my gun out of my purse (which was on the floor behind the driver's seat) and had put it in the glove box. I scrambled to get it out, as I did he came back around to the driver's side......he punched the window once and by the second punch, I had taken the gun out of the holster, taken the safety off and was now pointing it right at his face !!!! I knew then, if he broke the window I would fire!!! I never thought I could do that but I found out self preservation made me think and do something to protect myself. He immediately put up his hands, said ok, ok, and then ran across the street to the passenger side of the truck and they sped off. This all happened in less than 5 minutes......My employee was a little late coming down that morning and when he got to my car he found me with the gun in hand and very upset but ok. I am glad I had something to protect myself and I would have.
Back in 1994 I had moved to our new home with our 2 daughters and hubby was to join us in a year after he retired from the Navy. I was never afraid without him as I had to go 6 months or more at times while he was on deployments, so I was used to it. One day, the girls and I went out shopping and I always locked our doors and such. Well, we got home and after we entered the house, we saw the back door wide open and heard a noise down in the basement, like things being thrown around. Well I grabbed the phone to call 911 and headed into the bedroom with the girls and locked the door. I picked up the S+W.357 Magnum we had and I hid the girls under the bed. It was taking a long time for the police to show up so I called again and let them know we were in the bedroom and I had my gun and if anyone came through the door, I would shoot them. The 911 operator told me to make sure when the police got there, to put the gun down. I said I would as long as they proved they were police. Well, many, many minutes later, no sign of the police and I heard the bedroom doorknob being jiggled. I shouted out that I called the police and if anyone came through that door they were dead as I would shoot first and question later. Apparently, whoever it was took off and finally the police arrived. I was not afraid as I knew all the training I had would help me get through this. Yes, my girls were frightened, but afterward were happy that I was able to protect them. I did ask my brother to move in with us after that as we were in the boondocks. Even now, these many years later, I remember that and am confident that I can do what needs to be done in any circumstance.
My dad taught me how to shoot his .357 magnum when I was 9 years old. I knew it wasn't a toy and never touched it. He kept it loaded in his nightstand. We lived out in the country and one night when I was 17 years old I had come home early from a date because I didn't feel good. This was before 911 existed.
I took my dog and went to bed. I was awoken by two things. 1. I heard somebody trying to get in the back door (inside of the garage) open and 2. My dog was growling. It woke me up so suddenly realizing that my dog wouldn't growl if it was my parents and that I hadn't heard our electric garage door go up.
I ran down the hall, grabbed the gun and of course the phone was by the door in question. Just as I got within 4 feet of the back door I saw the doorknob turn and the door started to open. When it did I was face to face with a young man with my dad's gun aimed squarely at him. He took off running. It turned out that he had broken into our nearest neighbors house the night before. That gun probably saved my life and I am thankful I didn't have to use it but glad it was there.
In all of these stories, these women did not fire a single round. Being armed, trained and ready to use it as a final option is what prevented potentially horrific results. Laws vary from state to state on legally drawing your firearm. Take the time to learn them in your area. THANK YOU to the women who shared their stories with me.
If you have a story in which your possession or use of your gun saved your life or that of someone else and you would be willing to share it - please email me at info@thewellarmedwoman.com

EAR PROTECTION
Hearing protection is a neglected necessity. I see so many photos of women not wearing any ear protection and it has made me stop and wonder why. I believe it is the percieved inconvenience coupled with not having a full understanding of how important it is.
Let's cover the basics first. Hearing professionals warn that even a single exposure to any noise above 85 decibels can begin to harm hearing and if high enough (gun shots included) can cause instant or permanent damage. The average gun blast can measure between 140 and 150 decibels. So what does this mean? It means shooting a firearm is very loud and that can damage your hearing!!
Ear protection of one form or another is a necessity when you train. It can come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colors. There are some important things to consider when making your selection.
There are three types of hearing protection:
passive ear plugs, passive hearing protection muffs, and electronic hearing protection muffs. Passive simply means they don't utilize electronics.
- Ear plugs are typically soft plug made from plastic or foam and are placed into the ear opening.
- Passive ear muffs have cups which cover each ear entirely. The muffs are usually connected with a headband. Because muffs cover the entire ear and seal themselves against your head, they provide a better level of ear protection.
- Electronic ear muffs use electronic technology that reduces the noise down to a level that isn't harmful to the human ear. Electronic ear muffs allow the wearer to hear everything that is going on around them, but when a shot is fired it electronically dampens the higher noise.
Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) is the hearing protection rating method used in the U.S. and extends from 0 to 33 decibels. The higher the NRR the greater the noise level is reduced. This rating should be found on the product packaging. While wearing hearing protection your exposure to noise is equal to the total noise level minus the NRR of the hearing protection. For example, if you are exposed to 80db of noise but were wearing earplugs with an NRR of 29, your actual noise exposure would only be 51dB.
