Student Success - February Student of the Month
Ryan Driesbach is the February 2016 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove. He is in EASTERN's Collision Repair Technology program and a senior at Upper Moreland High School. The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN's faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor.

Ryan always had an interest in cars and, while in high school, he had some friends who were enrolled in the Collision Repair Technology class at EASTERN and they spoke highly of the program and the instructor.  Ryan decided to give the program a try, and today he is a leader in the class. Through Ryan's Collision Repair Technology program, he now holds industry certification such as, Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR) and Safety and Pollution Safety (S/P2).

At EASTERN, Ryan is involved in EASTERN's student leadership organization, SkillsUSA, and is currently the SkillsUSA Collision Repair Technology class representative.  During both the 2014 - 2015 and 2015 - 2016 school years, he was chosen by his instructor to attend the SkillsUSA Fall Leadership Conference in the Poconos, where he returned with several medals. As a junior, he received first place in the SkillsUSA Local Competition for Collision Repair Technology, and then went on to place fourth at the SkillsUSA District 2 Competition.  Again this year, Ryan placed first in the SkillsUSA Local Competition, and will be competing at the SkillsUSA District 2 Competition.  He is also the student representative for the Collision Repair Technology class's Occupational Advisory Committee, which is a group of professionals from local business and industry that volunteer their time and expertise to help EASTERN's instructors and administration to keep our curriculum cutting-edge and industry standard.

Last summer, Ryan volunteered as a student teacher for EASTERN's Summer Fun Automotive and Collision Repair program for middle school students. He also volunteers his time to local charities such as Meals on Wheels and the Kisses for Kyle Foundation.  He is also involved as a production staff member, lighting and equipment operator, stage crew member, and stage director for both the Jenkintown Music Theater and the Willow Manor Theater.

Ryan is currently employed part-time at Vintage Autobody in Hatboro.  After graduation from Upper Moreland High School and EASTERN, Ryan plans to attend Universal Technical Institute (UTI) to study collision repair, motorcycle tech and restoration/customer repair.  After competing his coursework at UTI, Ryan would like to attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania for his Bachelor of Science in Vocational Technical Education so that he can eventually teach at EASTERN.
Alumni Spotlight - EASTERN Connections: Michelle Klaski
EASTERN 1988 Computerized Information Systems/Upper Dublin High School graduate, Michelle Del Popolo Klaski, went directly into the workforce after graduation and has been enjoying a career in the office administration and customer service industries. Attending this program while in high school gave her the computer skills and professionalism required to succeed in any corporation or office environment.

Computerized Information Systems was the predecessor to EASTERN's Computer Network Administration program.  All of EASTERN's programs are industry-standard and use the same programs and equipment being used in the field. Klaski heard about this program offering while in tenth grade at Upper Dublin High School, and since she already had an interest in computers, she decided to enroll.

When Klaski's daughter, Brittany, approached her about attending Cosmetology at EASTERN, Klaski was thrilled.  Both Michelle, and her husband, Phil, are EASTERN graduates and respect the value of career and technical education.
Their daughter, Brittany, completed EASTERN's Cosmetology program in 2014.

"I would highly recommend any EASTERN program," said Klaski.  "It made me more valuable especially when first entering the workforce. My husband and daughter also benefitted from this great, real-world work environment that EASTERN offers."

Computer Network Administration students must pass the Certified Linux Administrator (CLA) exam in the first year of the program and are prepared for other industry certification exams, including Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS).
EASTERN Events - Open House
EASTERN's Open House was held Sunday, February 28, 2016, from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m.  There were approximately 650 visitors, Occupational Advisory Committee members from each program, 19 post-secondary representatives, many participating high school principals,  and several Joint Operating Committee members participated.  Faculty members indicated that our visitors were very interested in the programs at EASTERN and kept them busy during the entire Open House.

Big thanks for all who were able to join us.  For those who missed it, but are still interested in seeing the facility, please contact Amy Shields for a tour - ashields@eastech.org or 215-784-4806.

Inside EASTERN - EASTERN Students Win ADAGP Auto Competition
On Friday, February 26, EASTERN Automotive Technology students, Michael Steinmetz, a senior at Hatboro-Horsham High School, and Sean Hagerty a senior at Upper Dublin High School, along with 22 other high school seniors, competed in a hands-on automotive technician skills challenge for more than $900,000 in scholarships, tools and prizes, and the chance to compete at the National Automotive Technology Competition. EASTERN is proud to announce that Michael and Sean won first place!

The 23rd Annual Automotive Technology Competition, produced by the Auto Dealers CARing for Kids Foundation (the philanthropic arm of the Philadelphia Auto Show), provided the opportunity for teams of the finest automotive technical students from Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties and southern New Jersey to work against the clock in a timed, hands-on automotive technical skills competition. Students tested their knowledge at 10 workstations and performed a Pre-Delivery Inspection of a new vehicle.

Micheal and Sean will represent the Greater Philadelphia region in the National Automotive Technology Competition at the New York Auto Show in March.
