Student Success - March Student of the Month

Joseph Flint is the March 2015 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove. He is in EASTERN's Protective Services program and a senior at Abington High School. The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN's faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor.

Joseph comes from a family of firefighters, so he knew from a young age that it was going to be part of his future.  In middle school, he attended EASTERN's Summer Fun program, and became aware of the program offerings for high school juniors and seniors.

Protective Services provided him with an overview of the police, fire, security and EMT fields. Through his program, he has obtained several industry certifications, including, Hazardous Materials Operations through Bucks County Community College; National Incident Management System 200 level certification through FEMA; National Incident Management System 700a through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA); National Response Framework 800b through FEMA; and Incident Command Systems 100b through FEMA; Basic Rigging for Rope Rescue; Electrical Emergency; CPR; and Elevator Rescue Awareness. At the SkillsUSA District Competition in February he received the gold medal for Criminal Justice, and will now compete at the state level in April 2015.

Outside of EASTERN, Joseph is a Probationary Firefighter at the Roslyn Fire Company, while holding a part-time sales position at The Run Around in Roslyn.

After graduation from Abington High School and EASTERN, Joseph will begin his tour of duty for the U.S. Marine Corps. He will then attend Montgomery County Community College for a dual major in Fire Science and Emergency Management.  His plan is to become a paramedic and a firefighter.

Alumni Spotlight - Emily Dimant

Emily Dimant, a 2014 EASTERN Cosmetology and Lower Moreland graduate, is currently in her second semester at University of the Arts in Philadelphia majoring in Illustration.  Emily also owns and operates her own freelance make-up artistry business, specializing in bridal, special event and fashion makeup.  Samples of Emily's work can be seen on her Facebook fan page -Facebook.com/makeupbyemilydimant.

When Emily was in 8th grade, she learned about the Cosmetology program at EASTERN.  She patiently waited three years before she could enroll as a junior in high school.  She knew that nails, makeup, and hair styling were the main focus of the Cosmetology program at EASTERN, and she had always had a love for the industry.

Emily also had a natural talent for drawing and painting.  At University of the Arts, she

is now learning how to digitally create artwork using Photoshop, Illustrator and Corel Painter.  With her successful makeup business on the side, she is able to merge two loves - art and makeup.

"Without the help of my EASTERN Cosmetology Instructors, Ms. Mednick and Ms. Leyden, I would not have learned the

skills I use today on my clients," said Emily.  "I am very grateful for the opportunity that EASTERN gave me to be able to attend Cosmetology school for free, and to be able to obtain my Cosmetology license before starting college."

EASTERN's Cosmetology program will provide the skills necessary to begin a career in the cosmetology field. In Pennsylvania, as well as other states, cosmetologists and nail technicians must be licensed to practice in the field.

EASTERN Events - Computer Network Administration Program Prepares Students for College and Career

The Computer Network Administration program at EASTERN in Willow Grove is a great opportunity for high school students to get a head start on their Computer Network Administration education and career. Computer Network Administration students can also receive up to 12 transferable college credits through EASTERN's dual enrollment partnership with Montgomery County Community College.

EASTERN's Computer Network Administration program can help Eastern Montgomery County high school juniors and seniors to prepare for a rewarding career in fields such as Computer Information Systems, Computer Network Administration, and Technical Support Specialist. Computer Network Administration students also benefit from the connection EASTERN has with major industry vendors including Microsoft and Cisco.

Career opportunities in this field are in-demand and lucrative. Computer networks are everywhere and need technical support. EASTERN's Computer Network Administration students are prepared to take several industry certification exams.  A Computer Network Administrator maintains network infrastructure (such as switches and routers) and diagnoses problems with network-attached computers. With higher education, graduates can obtain positions in the IT Department of just about any type of industry.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2012-13 edition, network administration has been a growth industry since 2008. In fact, it's been estimated that network administration will remain one of the fastest growing sectors in the employment market through at least 2018.

In this two-year half-day program students must pass the Certified Linux Administrator (CLA) exam in the first year of the program and are prepared for other industry certification exams, including Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician.  To learn more about this program, please visit http://www.eastech.org/eastern-programs/cna/.

Inside EASTERN - Tayar Family Sponsors New Student Award

EASTERN is proud to announce that the Tayar family of Abington, PA is sponsoring the Gabe Tayar Memorial Award to benefit one student from EASTERN's Culinary Arts program at EASTERN's Awards Night on May 27, 2015.

This award is in memory of Gabe Tayar, the older brother of current Culinary Arts/Abington High School senior, Estey Tayar. Gabe lost his battle with cancer seven and a half years ago.  The Tayar family has sponsored various awards in Gabe's memory over the years, and has chosen EASTERN for 2015.

The EASTERN Culinary Arts instructors will choose a student who meets the criteria set by the Tayar family.  The student will be a graduating senior who has risen above challenges that may include developmental, physical, health or a learning disability, or has gone above and beyond to assist students with the above mentioned disabilities to meet their educational goals. Estey and her mother, Barbara, will present the award to the student at EASTERN's Awards Night.

"Each year, we search for new ways to honor Gabe," said Barbara Tayar.  "Estey has flourished in the Culinary Arts program at EASTERN, and we feel as though this is a great way to help a student who has overcome challenges of any kind, or to the student who has gone above and beyond to help those with challenges."

Culinary Arts at EASTERN enables students to acquire a variety of skills including soup and sauce preparation, preparation of meat, fish and poultry entrees, baking, kitchen sanitation, purchasing and inventory controls.

For those interested in donating to the Gabe Tayar Memorial Award, please send checks made payable to "EASTERN Foundation" to 3075 Terwood Road, Willow Grove, PA 19090.  Please note "Gabe Tayar Memorial Award" in the note section.
