Student Success - December Student of the Month

Jackson Kramer is the December 2014 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove. He is in EASTERN's Commercial Art program and a senior at Jenkintown High School. The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN's faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor.

Jackson currently maintains an A average in his Commercial Art program at EASTERN, while participating in a dual enrollment program at Montgomery County Community College (MCCC) through Jenkintown High School.

Jackson first heard about Commercial Art at EASTERN through a friend who graduated from the program. After learning more through the 10th Grade Career Expo presentation at Jenkintown High School, Jackson decided to enroll to help foster and enhance his love of photography.

At EASTERN, Jackson is active in SkillsUSA, EASTERN's student leadership organization. In April 2014, he attended the SkillsUSA State Competition as a State Officer Delegate and Campaign Manager. He was also part of the team that won second place at the SkillsUSA District Competition for Opening and Closing Ceremonies in December 2013. Jackson also volunteered his time this past summer to student teach the Computer Art and Digital Photography class for EASTERN's Summer Fun program for middle school students. Outside of school, Jackson is a Counselor at the Abington Club's Kids Club in Jenkintown.

After graduation from Jenkintown High School and EASTERN, Jackson plans to further his education in photography. Ultimately, he would like to work as a magazine photo journalist.

 Alumni Spotlight - Joe Koch

EASTERN 1977 Automotive Technology/Bishop McDevitt High School graduate, Joe Koch, donated a 1995 Oldsmobile Delta 98 Regency Elite to the Automotive Technology program.  Koch, who is semi-retired with a small construction and maintenance company, chose to donate this car as a tool for current students learning the trade and diagnostics.

Koch had four older brothers who loved cars, and there was always a vehicle being worked on in the driveway. Two of Koch's older brothers paved the way for him by also taking the Automotive Technology program at EASTERN.

After graduating from EASTERN and Bishop McDevitt High School in 1977, Koch worked as a mechanic in a few different shops through 1983, when he decided to go back to school at AirCo Tech in Philadelphia for welding.  Since welding is a big part of the auto field, he felt this education would enhance his trade and employability. In 1983 he obtained a position at the Budd Company, a metal fabrication company, a major supplier of body components to the automobile industry, and a manufacturer of stainless steel passenger rail cars. Koch started out as a press operator and advanced to a metal finisher.  He was also part of the Budd Company's Hazardous Materials and Ergonomics teams. Koch retired after 25 years, received a pension and started his own business.

"The teachers at EASTERN were good.  They taught you how to have fun with your job," said Koch.  "My instructor, Mr. Mertz, taught me how to move with the times, and gave us a realistic view on life and how to adjust priorities.  Without the automotive background I received at EASTERN, I would not have had my career at the Budd Company."

EASTERN Events - Gearing Up for 10th Grade Career Expo!
EASTERN's Tenth Grade Career Expo is underway! Starting in December and running through early February, we are spreading the word to all participating school tenth grade classes about all of the career and technical program opportunities offered at EASTERN. Tenth Grade Career Expo consists of a presentation made at each high school addressing all of EASTERN's program offerings, our recruitment video, and of course, a few words from current EASTERN students.

As a follow up to the in-school presentations, all interested students are invited to visit EASTERN on February 4 during the morning session, or February 25 during the afternoon session. During this visit, students have the opportunity to visit two different programs for 50 minutes each.

For more information about Tenth Grade Career Expo, please contact Amy Shields, EASTERN's Organizational Advancement Director at 215-784-4806 or ashields@eastech.org.
