Student Success - October Student of the Month
| |
Isis Abdul-Malik is the October 2014 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove. She is in EASTERN's Protective Services program and a senior at Cheltenham High School. The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN's faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor.
Isis has been interested in law enforcement for many years. She is a member of both the Philadelphia and Norristown Police Explorer Cadet Programs -organizations designed to guide young adults to a better path for the future through training, leadership, teamwork, discipline, friendship and to assist the Police Department and citizens through community service.
When she heard about the Protective Services program at EASTERN through Cheltenham High School, she knew this would be a great opportunity to enhance her knowledge about the field. Through EASTERN's Protective Services program, Isis has her National Incident Management System level 100 and 700 certificates.
At Cheltenham High School, she has participated on the Girls Basketball team, and is a member of the Poetry Club. She enjoys volunteering her time for community efforts such as disaster service with the Salvation Army and for the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church's Appreciation Ceremony in which they honor law enforcement, public safety and citizens who deserve recognition for their outstanding service to the community.
After graduation from Cheltenham High School and EASTERN, Isis plans to attend Temple University for an associate degree, and then to enter the police academy. Her goal is to become a Philadelphia Police Officer.

| Alumni Spotlight - Isabella Andre
|
EASTERN 2013 Allied Health/Lower Moreland High School graduate, Isabella Andre, is currently at Manor College completing her prerequisites for the Bachelor of Nursing program at Thomas Jefferson University. On September 18 and 19, Isabella took time out of her busy schedule to talk to the new class of Allied Health students about her education and career path since graduating from high school.
Isabella always knew that she wanted to pursue a career in which helping people was the main focus. While in 11th grade, she visited EASTERN's Allied Health program and decided to enroll for her senior year. Through Allied Health, Isabella had the unique opportunity to shadow healthcare professionals two days a week at Abington Memorial Hospital while still in high school. Isabella excelled in the Allied Health program, achieving straight A status, and began researching nursing schools. She was very impressed with Thomas Jefferson's program and was thrilled when she was formally accepted for the fall of 2015. She already completed the mandatory Medical Terminology class through EASTERN's Dual Enrollment program with Montgomery County Community College (MCCC). After high school graduation, she continued to take prerequisites at MCCC, and matriculated to Manor over the summer.
During her time at EASTERN, Isabella was the student representative for the Allied Health Occupational Advisory Committee and continues to serve as a former student representative. The OAC consists of local business and industry representatives that assist the instructors and administration in developing state-of-the-art curriculum.
"If you want to find out if a career in the healthcare field is for you, the Allied Health program at EASTERN offers you a first-hand look," said Isabella. You do not have to have your mind made up regarding your career before coming to EASTERN. The Allied Health program gives you the general foundation that you need for any healthcare or science major."
