Student Success - EASTERN Grad Receives MCCC Culinary Scholarship

Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) 2014 Culinary Arts/Upper Moreland High School graduate, Cassidy Ebner, is the recipient of the Montgomery County Community College (MCCC) Rising Star Female Chef Culinary Scholarship. As the recipient of this prestigious award, Cassidy will receive $5,014 to cover the cost of her knife set, two sets of uniforms, and a 13 credit course load for the 2014 fall semester.

The Rising Star Female Chef Culinary Scholarship application was made available earlier this summer to 2014 high school graduates with a minimum of 2.5 GPA, and a culinary arts background.  The top two candidates chosen by the scholarship selection committee met with the Director of MCCC's Culinary Arts Institute for an interview.

From a young age, Cassidy was inspired by the culinary arts field.  She enjoyed watching the cooking channel and wanted to become a chef. Through Upper Moreland High School, she learned about EASTERN's Culinary Arts program, and saw this as a great way to begin her future.

"Culinary Arts at EASTERN has taught me so much, and I feel as though I am ready to face the real world," said Cassidy.  I have learned that you can do anything you set your mind to. Not only am I receiving this scholarship, but I also obtained college credits through my program at EASTERN and a statewide articulation agreement with MCCC."

In addition to this scholarship, Cassidy will be mentored by MCCC's Culinary Director, and will have the opportunity to be mentored by members of the MCCC Culinary Arts Advisory Board.  Her ultimate goal after completing her education is to work in a restaurant as a head chef and, later in life, open up a restaurant with her father.

 Alumni Spotlight - Kaitlyn Bussman

EASTERN 2009 Cosmetology/Upper Moreland High School graduate, Kaitlyn Reading Bussman, is currently a stylist at Bliss Salon in Saint Joseph, MO, where she resides with her husband and daughter.

After high school graduation and completing her program at EASTERN, Kaitlyn passed the State Board Examination for Cosmetology.  Before moving to Missouri with her husband in 2012, Kaitlyn volunteered her time as a member of EASTERN's Cosmetology Occupational Advisory Committee, which helps the instructors and administration to keep the program's curriculum state-of-the-art, and she co-taught EASTERN's Looking Good Summer Fun course in June and July of 2012. While she was still in Pennsylvania, she worked as a stylist at Shear Madness in Warminster, PA. During her time as a Cosmetology student at EASTERN, Kaitlyn was very involved with the school's student leadership organization, SkillsUSA.

"Thanks to the education I received at EASTERN, I am working in a top rated salon in Missouri with a current Pennsylvania license, said Kaitlyn. I am a successful hairdresser with knowledge that astonishes my coworkers. Thank you to my instructors, Ms. Wilson and Ms. Leyden for giving me the skills to succeed no matter where I go."

EASTERN's Cosmetology program is a two-year half-day program that provides the skills necessary to begin a career in the cosmetology field. In Pennsylvania, as well as other states, cosmetologists and nail technicians must be licensed to practice in the field.

EASTERN Events - Foundation Meal Fundrasier

EASTERN Foundation is holding a happy hour (actually, its three hours) at Jerzee's Sports Bar & Pizzeria in Glenside, PA on Thursday, October 2, 2014 from 5 - 8 p.m. The fundraiser will also include live acoustic music and a 50/50 raffle.  Jerzee's Sports Bar & Pizzeria is located at 2609 Mount Carmel Avenue, Glenside, PA 19038-2911.  You can visit them online at www.jerzeesglenside.com.

Jerzee's Sports Bar and Pizzeria will donate 15 percent of the total proceeds to the EASTERN Foundation for student awards.  It is as simple as letting the server/bartender know that you are with the EASTERN Foundation. If you are unable to attend during the 5 - 8 p.m. time frame, but still want to assist, you can come to Jerzee's Sports Bar and Pizzeria any time during the day and the Foundation will still be credited. Takeout orders count too!

The EASTERN Foundation has one reason for existing - to encourage students in their pursuit of career ambitions that were developed and strengthened by attending EASTERN. The Foundation does this by rewarding student success and achievement through scholarships and awards which are presented in May at our Annual Awards Night.  For more information on EASTERN Foundation activities, please visit http://www2.eastech.org/foundation/foundation-activities.

The EASTERN Foundation is a registered, non-profit, 501(c)(3). The purpose of EASTERN's Foundation is to recognize EASTERN student achievement and success, assist them if post-secondary education is their goal, or help them start a rewarding career.
