Student Success - May Student of the Month

Vincent Capriotti is the May 2014 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove. He is in EASTERN's Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) program and a senior at Cheltenham High School. The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN's faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor.

At EASTERN, Vincent is active in SkillsUSA and currently serves as Council Representative.  During the 2012 - 2013 school year, Vincent was the SkillsUSA HVAC Class President and was selected to attend the Career and Technical Student Organization Leadership Conference held in the Poconos. SkillsUSA is a national student organization promoting good citizenship, student leadership, professionalism, teamwork, and recognizes student achievement and excellence. This year, Vincent was selected by his instructor, Brian Jacoby, as a student ambassador to represent the HVAC program at EASTERN's Parents Night.

At Cheltenham, Vincent is on the Academic Honor Roll, and was selected the November 2011 Student of the Month.  He is currently the President of the Sims (Simulation) Club. Last year he served as President for the Anime Club, having orchestrated a successful Anime Convention at Cheltenham High School during the 2011 - 2012 and 2012 - 2013 school years, with proceeds benefitting the Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund.

"Vincent is hard working and very intelligent," said Brian Jacoby, EASTERN's HVAC Instructor.   "He has proven leadership skills, and is enthusiastic about the work he does here at EASTERN."

After completing his HVAC program at EASTERN and graduating from Cheltenham High School, Vincent plans to attend Penn College of Technology to continue his HVAC education. After Penn College, Vincent would like to attend Montgomery County Community College for Business, and ultimately would like to work as a Telecommunications Apprentice in Center City Philadelphia.

Alumni Spotlight - Jillian Natter
EASTERN 2007 Commercial Art/Hatboro-Horsham High School graduate, Jillian Natter, is currently working as an interactive designer at Pet360, where she designs emails and web assets for both Pet360.com and Petfooddirect.com.  Jillian received her Associate of Science degree in Graphic Design from the Art Institute of Philadelphia in June 2010.

When Jillian was in tenth grade, she received a few brochures about EASTERN's program offerings.  She was already interested in photography and had taken a few classes at that time, so this seemed to be a perfect next step.

A few months after graduating from the Art Institute of Philadelphia she started working at two part-time design jobs; at a vehicle wrap company and a non-profit legal company. She eventually received a full-time position at the legal company and stayed there for two years before starting her current position as an interactive designer at Pet360.

"The things I learned at EASTERN were some of the most valuable basics of graphic design I have been taught," said Jillian.  "If you have an interest in graphic design, there is no better way of getting a huge head start in the industry than attending Commercial Art at EASTERN. EASTERN taught me to be punctual, track my time, and how to work with a team. Also, I was able to almost instantly apply the techniques that I learned in class, which really enabled me to hone my skills."

EASTERN Events - Awards Night 2014

Congratulations to all award recipients!

Inside EASTERN  - Two EASTERN Students Selected for Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program Scholarship

EASTERN students, Juan Paolo Figueras (Paolo), Computer Network Administration/Springfield High School senior, and Donovan Calhoun, Culinary Arts/Upper Dublin High School senior, have been chosen as two of only 25 students selected throughout the nation to participate in the Congress-Bundestag program. The Congress-Bundestag Vocational Scholarship provides an opportunity for U.S. high school graduates who have undertaken vocational training to spend their 13th year abroad pursuing their vocational interests. This scholarship is provided through NACEL Open Door, Inc.  Nacel Open Door, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to international understanding and language education.

Paolo has decided to defer his acceptance to Penn State for one year.  Upon his return, he will be pursuing  IT Security at Penn State. Ultimately, he hopes to work for a large corporation such as Google, Apple or Microsoft.

Donovan has deferred attending Johnson & Wales in Providence, Rhode Island, until his return.  Johnson & Wales has agreed to also defer a $9,000 scholarship per year that Donovan has been awarded. He will be enrolled in Johnson & Wales Food and Service Entrepreneurship program.

Facts About Career and Technical Education
MSNBC reported in March 2009 that many people who have been laid off during the economic crisis are taking this opportunity to go back to school and get retrained for a new career. CTE programs at the postsecondary level are poised to serve this population.
