Student Success - March Student of the Month

Daniel Biddle is the March 2014 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove. He is in EASTERN's Protective Services program and a senior at Springfield High School. The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN's faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor.

At EASTERN, Daniel is active in SkillsUSA.  He was the Protective Services Class Vice President during the 2012 - 2013 school year, and is currently a Council Representative. SkillsUSA is a national student organization promoting good citizenship, student leadership, professionalism, teamwork, and recognizes student achievement and excellence. Daniel was also selected as the student representative for the Protective Services Occupational Advisory Committee.  This committee is made up of local business and industry professionals who meet regularly throughout the year to help EASTERN's administrators and instructors to develop the most cutting-edge curriculum and to ensure the tools being used in each program are the same as what is being used in the field. As a junior, Daniel was awarded the prestigious Director's Award at EASTERN's Awards Night in May 2013.  This award is only presented to two juniors each year who demonstrate outstanding leadership skills.

Daniel is working on his Eagle Scout project through BSA Troop 320. He studies Tae Kwon Do, and is an assistant instructor.  He has also been a volunteer Junior Firefighter since December 2012.  He is trained in CPR, Hazardous Materials Awareness, and Gas and Electric Operations.

Daniel plans to attend Montgomery County Community College for his Associate Degree, and to then matriculate to Shippensburg University to pursue his Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice.  He will then join the Police Academy and join the Philadelphia Police Department.

Alumni Spotlight - Elaina Leonardi

EASTERN 2012 Culinary Arts/Upper Moreland High School graduate, Elaina Leonardi, is in her last semester at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) Academy of Culinary Arts, where she is focusing on Baking and Pastry Arts.

Once Elaina completes the classroom portion of her program, she plans to take full advantage of IUP's externship program.  In May, Elaina moves to North Carolina to begin her externship at Mountain Air Country Club in Burnsville.  She will be working in the kitchen in various capacities, bolstering her resume and giving her an opportunity to demonstrate what she has learned over the years through her education at EASTERN and IUP.  For the externship, students interview with various organizations over a 15-day period.  Elaina interviewed with three different sites during that time, and Mountain Air Country Club was her first choice, and her first offer.

Elaina grew up in the kitchen - always helping her grandmother cook. While at Upper Moreland High School, she visited EASTERN as a sophomore, and felt as though Culinary Arts was a great first step toward her future as a chef.

Elaina chose IUP's program due to its intensity. They cover a semester's worth of information over every 15 day period.  She works with all different types of decorative mediums.  Some of her more recent projects included pastillage - used as show pieces for buffets, chocolate, pulled and blown sugar, fondant, and ice cream.

"My advice to any student wanting to enter the culinary field is to keep your head down, learn as much as possible, and just say - Yes Chef," said Elaina.  "Just remember that if it were easy, then anyone could do it.  EASTERN was my gateway for IUP.  I probably wouldn't have gone to a post-secondary school if it weren't for EASTERN.  I didn't think about college until coming here and seeing the opportunities available to me.

EASTERN Events - Gearing Up for Awards Night 2014!

EASTERN's Award Night  will be held Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 7 p.m. at Upper Moreland High School. Awards Night recognizes students who are on the Honor Roll, Students of the Month through the year, medal winners at SkillsUSA District and State Competitions, winners of special end-of-year awards, and those who have Perfect Attendance.

EASTERN is pleased to announce that several new awards have been instituted for this year's Awards Night such as the Sandy Woerner Memorial Award for a Culinary Arts student sponsored by the Woerner family, and the Office Management Award sponsored by the Hessinger family.

Inside EASTERN - Foundation Fundraiser/Happy Hour Success!
The Eastern Foundation wants to thank everyone who participated in the Foundation Meal Fundraiser/Happy Hour to support EASTERN student awards.  Mike's York Street Bar and Grill donated a portion of the profits to the EASTERN Foundation and funds were raised through a 50/50. In total, the event raised over $500.

Special thanks to EASTERN Collision Repair Technology instructor, Steve Parke, for donating back his winnings from the 50/50, stating, "EASTERN has given so much to me - it is the least I can do." Steve is also a graduate of EASTERN's Collision Repair program.
