Student Success - February Student of the Month

Ashley Hoover is the February 2014 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove. She is in EASTERN's Commercial Art program and a senior at Hatboro-Horsham High School. The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN's faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor.

At EASTERN, Ashley is maintaining a straight A average in her Commercial Art program for the second consecutive year. She is active in SkillsUSA as the School-Wide Secretary for the 2013 - 2014 school year. She was also part of the team who received first place at the SkillsUSA District Competition for Opening and Closing Ceremonies last February. She was selected by her EASTERN instructors to attend the Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) Leadership Conference in the Poconos in 2012 and 2013. Along with the Straight A Award, she was recognized for Perfect Attendance at EASTERN's Awards Night in May 2013. She often volunteers her time to use her photography skills for various EASTERN events such as Open House and the Advisory Appreciation Brunch. Last summer, she volunteered as a student teacher for EASTERN's Summer Fun program for middle school students.

At Hatboro-Horsham High School she has maintained her Honor Roll status since 2008. She is a member of Hatters, Inc., a group that works to foster relationships between individuals with disabilities and their typical peers in an effort to enhance their participation in the school and community. She is also a member of Hatboro-Horsham High School's Key Club. She is involved in the community as a Sunday School Teacher and Youth Group Member.

"Ashley is an exceptional student with great drive and motivation," said Nicole Mohrey, EASTERN's Commercial Art Instructor. "She has a strong sense of volunteerism and is always willing to take the extra time to assist a classmate."

Ashley plans to further her education in the marketing field. She is currently narrowing down her post-secondary options. She feels as though the skills she gained through the Commercial Art program at EASTERN have prepared her for college and ultimately a successful career in the marketing field.

Alumni Spotlight - Kelly Meissner

Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) 2007 Commercial Art/Upper Moreland High School graduate, Kelly Meissner, is currently the owner and operator of Ugly Apparel, LLC -- a custom apparel company based out of Jenkintown,  is a freelance illustrator, and
is a substitute Commercial Art instructor at EASTERN.

Through EASTERN's 8th Grade Career Expo, Kelly visited three programs: Commercial Art, Collision Repair Technology, and Culinary Arts.  Prior to the visit, Kelly already knew that Commercial Art would relate to her future career, which was design and illustration.

After graduating from EASTERN and Upper Moreland High School, she pursued her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia.  She was a tattoo apprentice during college, which led her to open her own tattoo shop during her senior year.  She sold the business in 2012 to focus more on her freelance illustration career. In 2013 she received a grant from the Corzo Center for the Creative Economy and Wells Fargo to start her own clothing company - Ugly Apparel, LLC.

"Ninety-five percent of my career success is because of the career and technical education I received at EASTERN," said Kelly.  "Commercial Art at EASTERN gave me the professional portfolio I needed to get into the college program of my choice.  While college gave me the degree, EASTERN really gave me the technical and professional development skills to obtain and succeed at the jobs I have applied for."

EASTERN's Commercial Art program covers everything from conceptual drawing and design to a professional portfolio. Students learn the value and application of their unique styles in the areas of design, illustration, and commercial photography. Students learn to use industry- standard design practices and equipment from digital single-lens reflex cameras to the Adobe Suite.  All students gain competencies in each area of the commercial art field, allowing them to get a comprehensive sampling of the industry as a whole.

The EASTERN Foundation has one reason for existing - to encourage students in their pursuit of career ambitions that were developed and strengthened by attending EASTERN.
