 | Student Success - November Student of the Month | |
Lauren Bissig is the November 2013 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove. She is in EASTERN's Culinary Arts program and a senior at Hatboro-Horsham High School. The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN's faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor.
At EASTERN, Lauren maintains an A average in her Culinary Arts program, and is actively involved in SkillsUSA. She has been extremely successful with SkillsUSA competitions, winning first place for Culinary Arts at the SkillsUSA State Competition in April, and achieving an impressive 12th place out of 43 competitors at the national-level in Kansas City, MO last June. As a junior, she received several awards at EASTERN's Awards Night, such as Straight A, Perfect Attendance, the Zwilling J.A. Henkels Award for culinary achievement, and the EASTERN Foundation Award. She served as an EASTERN student ambassador several times over the past two school years by representing her Culinary Arts program at the Hatboro-Horsham College Fair.
Lauren attended additional classes at EASTERN to attain her ServSafe certification, which is a food and beverage safety training and certificate program administered by the National Restaurant Association. She is also a member of the American Culinary Federation, the largest professional chefs' organization in North America.
To complement her education in EASTERN's Culinary Arts program, Lauren is a stage at Mica Restaurant in Chestnut Hill. Lauren gives her time and talents to various EASTERN, charity, and community events. At Hatboro-Horsham High School, Lauren has been on the distinguished honor roll for her entire high school tenure.
Lauren is currently narrowing down her post-secondary options, but she plans to continue her education in the culinary field, and eventually become a Sous-Chef at a restaurant in the Philadelphia area.

| Alumnus Spotlight - George Marin |
EASTERN 1968 Computer Network Administration/Upper Moreland High School graduate, George Marin, is one of EASTERN's most notable and successful graduates, and continues to give back to the school and its programs as President of the EASTERN Foundation.
Marin decided to attend EASTERN prior to his junior year at Springfield High School, as he was developing a strong interest in computer programming. Prior to his senior year, Marin moved to Upper Moreland and transferred high schools, but was able to continue his program at EASTERN. After graduating from high school, Marin continued to pursue his computer programming education by obtaining an Associate of Applied Science from Montgomery County Community College, and then his Bachelor of Science from Point Park University, and finally a Master's Degree in Software Engineering from University of Pennsylvania - the Executive Master's in Technology Management that is co-sponsored by Wharton Business and Penn Engineering Graduate Schools.
Marin started his career working for a local food distributor, Rotelle, Inc., while working toward his Bachelor Degree - a job that was recommended by his EASTERN Instructor, Mel Johnson. He stayed with the company, and after college, he ran the computer department for nine years, writing all of their software. In 1982 he started a computer consulting company, Data Tech Services, Inc., and began selling and installing the software he had developed while at Rotelle, Inc. In 2000 he merged Data Tech Services, Inc., with his largest competitor and started a company called Integrated Distribution Solutions (IDS). In 2005 he sold IDS to Retalix USA, a retail global company that was interested in supply chain solutions like IDS. He stayed on as a consultant/Sr. Product Solutions Engineer. In 2013, Retalix was purchased by NCR Corporation. He hopes to begin his well-deserved retirement later this year.
Marin started out as a member of EASTERN's Advisory Committee for the Computer Science program, and now leads the EASTERN Foundation in its efforts to provide monetary awards to deserving students, as well as tools of the trade. EASTERN honored Marin's countless contributions to the school in 2003 with the Distinguished Service Award - one of only five ever awarded in the school's history.
"EASTERN provided me with an understanding of the computer industry, and what areas I was most interested in learning more about," said Marin. "It gave me two years of experience during my last two years of high school in a field that I knew I was going to pursue. EASTERN also gave me enough confidence with a basic understanding of computers and programming, that I found college to be an easy extension of knowledge. This is a great place to begin a long and successful career."

 | EASTERN Events - EASTERN Foundation Auction/Murder Mystery Proved a Success | The EASTERN Foundation held the sixth annual Foundation Auction fundraiser on November 8, 2013. This year, for the first time, we added a Murder Mystery, Greased, performed by the professional actors at Without a Cue Productions. In total, the EASTERN Foundation raised over $11,000 for student awards through ticket sales, silent auction items, and raffles conducted throughout the evening.
One entire section of silent auction items was collected and packaged by the Laroche family to benefit the Christopher Laroche Memorial Award that is presented each May to a Culinary Arts or Electrical Technology student chosen by the family. That particular section raised over $2,000 of the $11,000 for this prestigious student award.
"This was a really fun event - and the Murder Mystery performance really added to the already successful fundraiser," said George Marin, EASTERN Foundation President and 1968 EASTERN graduate. "We are pleased with the results of the fundraiser, and want to thank all of the local businesses and individuals who donated, attended, and volunteered their time to make this another great evening. And special thanks to the Laroche family for all of their hard work collecting great auction items for the Christopher Laroche Memorial Award section, and for their support of the EASTERN Foundation."
The EASTERN Foundation exists to encourage students in the pursuit of career ambitions that were developed and strengthened by attending EASTERN. The Foundation does this by rewarding student success and achievement through scholarships and awards which are presented in May at our Annual Awards Night. Inside EASTERN - Supporting the Pajama Program
| |
Once again, EASTERN faculty and staff are participating in the Pajama Program fundraiser by collecting new pajamas and books for children from birth to 17 years of age. For anyone interested in donating, pajamas and/or book drop-offs can be made at the main entrance of the school. We will continue our collection through December 19 at 10 a.m.
The Pajama Program, a 501(c) (3) organization, provides comfort and love in the way of new pajamas and new books to children in need, many waiting and hoping to be adopted. Snuggling up in new, warm pajamas with their very own book to read gives lonely children a secure and nurturing bedtime environment. The Pajama Program depends on the support of volunteers, supporters, event hosts, pajama drive sponsors, and of course, donations of cozy new pajamas and new children's books.
