Student Success - October Student of the Month
Add a description Jaclyn Piccari is the October 2013 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove. She is in EASTERN's Cosmetology program and a senior at Upper Dublin High School. The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN's faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor.

At EASTERN, Jaclyn maintains high grades in her Cosmetology program, and is currently working on obtaining the 1,250 hours needed prior to taking the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology Exam. She is actively involved in SkillsUSA, and served as the Cosmetology class Secretary during the 2012 - 2013 school year. Last fall, she was selected to attend the Fall Leadership Conference for the Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) in the Poconos and came home with a gold medal for Leadership and a bronze medal for Cosmetology. She also volunteered her time and talents to Cosmetology clinics run throughout the school year that benefitted The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Abington Memorial Hospital's Cancer Center.

During her junior year at EASTERN, Jaclyn represented EASTERN and her Cosmetology program at EASTERN's Tenth Grade Career Expo presentation at Upper Dublin, where she spoke about her experiences at EASTERN. She is currently the Occupational Advisory Committee's (OAC) Student Representative for Cosmetology. The OAC is relied upon to establish curriculum, establish performance standards and recommend tools and equipment. Members of the OAC are a valuable resource to the instructor in planning instructional activities for all 14 EASTERN programs.

After graduation from Upper Dublin High School and EASTERN and passing her Pennsylvania State Board Exam for Cosmetology, Jaclyn plans to attend medical school to become a dermatologist while working as a part-time esthetician. She plans to stay in the skin care industry during college and to have a career in a spa as an esthetician.
 Alumnus Spotlight - Donte Reid

EASTERN 1998 Automotive Technology/Upper Moreland High School graduate, Donte Reid, is currently the owner and operator of Donte's Automotive in Hatboro. Donte's Automotive has served the local community for two years.

When Donte was 14, he watched his family members work on their own cars, and soon developed an interest in the automotive field. Several of his older friends attended EASTERN for Welding Technology and Construction Technology, so he already knew of the Automotive Technology program offering.

During his second year at EASTERN, Donte qualified for an internship, and worked several days a week in the field at Firestone in Abington, providing Donte with real-world work experience, a pay check, and the credits he needed to graduate from high school. Internships at EASTERN are only for second-year students who are doing exceedingly well in their programs, and this experience is orchestrated by the class instructor. Before Donte even graduated from EASTERN and Upper Moreland High School he was hired as a full-time technician at Firestone. After holding positions at three different automotive companies throughout his career, Donte decided he was ready to open his own shop. Since most of his clientele spans from Abington to Warrington, he found Hatboro to be an ideal location.

"Mr. McDonald was a hard, but fair, instructor. I have come to appreciate that even more as I get older. His teaching provided me with the building blocks to the career I have today," said Donte. "Go with your gut if you feel as though the automotive field is for you - some aspects are inherent and not always taught. If that is what you want to do - go with it."

Donte's Automotive is located at 21 North York Road, Unit 8, in Hatboro. He can be reached at 215-259-3232. Become a fan on Facebook at www.facebook.com/DontesAutomotive.

EASTERN's Automotive Technology program is designed for the student who is serious about working in the automotive industry. Career Objectives include Automotive Technician Trainee; Under Car Specialist; and New Car Preparation Technician.
