 | Student Success - EASTERN Students Participate in SkillsUSA National Competition |
Seven students from Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove competed in their skill areas at the SkillsUSA National Competitions held June 24-28 in Kansas City, Missouri. EASTERN student participants took sixth place for Promotional Bulletin Board, tenth place for Chapter Display, and twelfth place for Culinary Arts. SkillsUSA is a national student leadership organization that encourages students to be productive individuals in our democratic society, work to their potential, become responsible, be proud of their accomplishments and supportive of their community. National Competition Winners from EASTERN include:
Sixth-Place for Promotional Bulletin Board - EASTERN Commercial Art students, Brian Behler, a senior at Upper Moreland High School; William Mettinger, a junior at Abington High School; and Cheyenne Jacobs, a senior at Cheltenham High School. A panel of judges rate the bulletin board displays created by SkillsUSA chapters based on the annual SkillsUSA theme. The bulletin boards promote SkillsUSA, career and technical education in general, and related occupational information. An accompanying notebook documents the development and construction of the bulletin board. An oral presentation explains the process, purpose and educational value.
Tenth-Place for Chapter Display - EASTERN Commercial Art students, Tatyana Leonova, a senior from Lower Moreland High School; and Alicia Dredge, a junior from Hatboro-Horsham High School; and EASTERN Collision Repair Technology student, Jonathan Mehrman, a junior at Upper Moreland High School. A panel of judges selects the outstanding promotional exhibit designed and constructed by SkillsUSA student members. The display is built around and articulates a common theme established annually by SkillsUSA. The contest involves a team of no more than three students setting up the display and one student presenting information about the display in a presentation/interview with judges.
Twelfth-Place for Culinary Arts - Lauren Bissig, EASTERN Culinary Arts student and Hatboro-Horsham High School junior. This competition consisted of preparing a four course menu including a salad with emulsified dressing, cream soup, a salmon entree, and chicken entree.
In addition, Sarah Welch, EASTERN Commercial Art/Upper Moreland High School junior and SkillsUSA Pennsylvania State Officer, served as a delegate for Central Montco Technical High School's National Officer Candidate Elizabeth Czerpak. Elizabeth won and has been elected Region 1 Vice President. Elizabeth is Pennsylvania's first National Officer in over 15 years.

| Alumni Spotlight - Andrew Benischeck
|
EASTERN 2011 Welding Technology/Upper Dublin High School graduate, Andrew Benischeck, is currently stationed in Yokosuka, Japan with the United States Navy. He is on the U.S.S. George Washington, a nuclear aircraft carrier. His job is to maintain and fix the electronics and computers for airplanes, such as range-finding systems. After he completes his enlistment period in two years, Benischeck plans to pursue a career in welding and attend a post-secondary welding school through the G.I. Bill. Home on leave for a few days this week, Benischeck, visited EASTERN to speak to the Welding Technology class about post-secondary options.
Benischeck's grandfather and uncle were both in the Navy, which sparked Benischeck's initial interest. His parents were supportive of his decision, and encouraged him to pursue this path. The Navy provided the electronics training necessary for his current job position.
Benischeck had a friend who attended a career and technical high school, and he liked the idea of choosing to learn something beneficial to his career. When he transferred to Upper Dublin High School as a junior, he chose EASTERN's half-day Welding Technology program. Benischeck completed EASTERN's Welding Technology program with the second highest grade ever. At EASTERN, Benischeck served as a student ambassador, and represented his Welding Technology program at Career Expo presentations for tenth grade students.
"Having two years of welding experience is a very impressive thing to have on your resume coming right out of high school," said Benischeck. Whether or not you choose to pursue the career field you studied at EASTERN, it provides you with a skill that not everyone else possesses."
EASTERN's Welding Technology program is designed for the student who is interested in the industrial engineering field. This program prepares students for success in such career fields as mechanical, aerospace or industrial engineering, physical metallurgist, business owner, teaching, equipment sales and welding engineer.

 | EASTERN Events - Cosmetology Students Create High Fashion Looks
|
On July 23, 2013, EASTERN Cosmetology students participated in a competition in which they made their model look like a photo in a fashion magazine. EASTERN staff members walked through the Cosmetology program looking at the styles and the photos which they were modeled after and voted on their top three styles. The top three winning looks were created by Traci Durieux, a junior at Cheltenham High School; Micayla Thompson, a junior at Upper Moreland High School; and Faith Cruz, a junior at Abington High School. The EASTERN Cosmetology students who competed are in class all summer in order to obtain the 1,250 required hours necessary in order to take the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology Exam. "This was a great opportunity for us to really demonstrate the skills we have obtained in both the hair and make-up aspects of Cosmetology," said first place winner, Traci Durieux. "The Cosmetology program at EASTERN is really preparing us for successful careers in the field, and this competition is just one example of the fun and interesting projects we work on throughout the school year and summer." EASTERN's Cosmetology program provides the skills necessary to begin a career in the cosmetology field. In Pennsylvania, as well as other states, cosmetologists and nail technicians must be licensed to practice in the field. Here is a glimpse of the first-place look. Congratulations to Traci Durieux, and her model, Tessa Inoles (photographed below), a junior at Abington High School.

Inside EASTERN -
EASTERN Was Homebase for Local Company's Eco-Friendly Collision Repair Training
|
For the week beginning July 15, 2013, EASTERN was home base for R.W. Mallon Auto Paints & Equipment employees being trained on new Small Area Repair Techniques (SMART) collision repair technologies. Robert Mallon, proprietor of R.W. Mallon Auto Paints & Equipment, is also the chairperson of EASTERN's Occupational Advisory Committee (OAC) for the Collision Repair Technology high school program. Each of EASTERN's 14 programs has a group of volunteers from local business and industry that assist our faculty and administration on keeping the curriculum and tools used in each program relevant to the skills needed in today's workforce.
R.W. Mallon contracted with RPN Collision Technologies to train the R.W. Mallon employees on some new eco-friendly products that they will be distributing. RPN Collision Technologies utilizes repair technologies from the UK-based company, ECO Repair Systems.
"EASTERN provided a great space for our training," said Robert Mallon. "We were able to utilize the cars in their Collision Repair Technology program to demonstrate the new technologies such as pulling dents, and repairing rubber and plastic bumpers. This new technology will allow us to repair panels that normally would be replaced. As the OAC chairperson for the Collision Repair Technology class, I am excited about demonstrating these new technologies to our high school students during the school year. The new bumper and plastic repairs will allow our students to repair these products versus sending them to a landfill."
"The ECO Repair Systems products that we are using are economically and environmentally friendly," said Mike Monaghan, Managing Director at RPN Collision Technologies. "Our products are developed in the interest of the consumer and based on quality and performance. The customer can get his car back faster, which reduces cost to the insurance carrier, and ultimately, the consumer is not subjected to an increase in premiums."
