Student Success - Christina Catherman; April Student of the Month
Christina Catherman is the April 2013 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove. She is in EASTERN's Allied Health program and a senior at Upper Moreland High School. The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN's faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor.

At EASTERN, Christina maintains high grades in both her Allied Health program and her Medical Terminology dual enrollment course through Montgomery County Community College. She is actively involved in SkillsUSA, and recently competed in the SkillsUSA District Competition for the Health Knowledge Bowl.

Christina volunteers her time as a student ambassador for EASTERN at events such as Career Expo and Open House.  At Upper Moreland High School, Christina is an honor roll student. Christina currently performs clerical work for Jeffrey Cooper, M.D., Otolaryngologist, at his Willow Grove office.

Through EASTERN's Allied Health program, Christina gains extensive clinical experiences, partnering with health professionals at Abington Memorial Hospital two days a week.  Christina comes from a long line of successful EASTERN graduates and knew that it was the right place for her to get a head start on her chosen profession.

Christina plans to attend Montgomery County Community College for one year.  She will complete 11 pre-requisite courses in order to attend Abington Memorial Hospital's Dixon School of Nursing, where she will pursue her bachelor's degree in Nursing.

 Alumnus Spotlight - Bryan Neuhauser

EASTERN 2011 Culinary Arts/ATG High School graduate, Bryan Neuhauser, is in his second year of his three-year bachelor's degree program at The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College. After he obtains his bachelor's degree in Hotel Management, he plans to go into the food and beverage industry - a growing part of the hospitality industry today.

Through his education at Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College, he found the food and beverage industry to be the most interesting aspect of his culinary arts education.

Bryan chose the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College due to the small class sizes, and the top-notch management professors. He recently returned from a program trip designed to show the students real world examples of leaders in the hospitality management industry. The trip included a visit to Florida and behind-the-scenes looks at Disney, Epcot, Grand Floridian, Swan and Dolphin, the Orlando Orange County Convention Center, Arnold Palmer's Bay Hill Private Club, and the Hard Rock Café.  Students also had the opportunity to eat at a 5 diamond restaurant - Victoria & Albert's. The group finished up the trip with a cruise to Nassau, Bahamas, where they toured the Sheraton and were provided a tour of the ship.

Because Bryan was a high energy high school student, Lower Moreland School District suggested that he visit the programs at EASTERN.  After visiting several programs, he chose Culinary Arts.  He enjoyed the hands-on atmosphere of the class, and found the instructors, Chef Gary Albert and Chef Joel Marucheck, to be very welcoming.

"I enjoy coming back to EASTERN whenever I can to help out. I will never forget where I came from," said Bryan. "If you are interested in a career program - visit EASTERN.  Whether or not you choose to go to college, you will graduate high school with a skill that can help you throughout your life."

EASTERN Events - EASTERN Prepares for Annual Awards Night
EASTERN's Awards Night will be held 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Upper Moreland High School.  Last year, 112 students were recognized for their achievements, with $39,650 awarded in the form of scholarships, tools of the trade, plaques, certificates and checks. Awards Night recognizes students who are on the honor roll, Students of the Month through the year, medal winners at SkillsUSA District and State Competitions, winners of special end-of-year awards, and those who have perfect attendance.

Student awards are provided by the EASTERN Foundation, and supported by businesses, various community organizations, and individual donors.  The purpose of EASTERN's Foundation is to recognize EASTERN student achievement and success by assisting both students whose goal is post-secondary education and students who intend to start a rewarding career. Our business and industry partners inspired this effort and continue to support it extensively.
