 | Student Success - Irvin Romero; December Student of the Month |
Irvin Romero is the December 2012 Student of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN) in Willow Grove. He is in his second year of EASTERN's Collision Repair Technology program and a senior at Hatboro-Horsham High School. The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN's faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor.
At EASTERN, Irvin maintains an A average in the Collision Repair Technology program and is actively involved in SkillsUSA as the 2012 - 2013 SkillsUSA Collision Repair Technology Class President. SkillsUSA is a national student organization promoting good citizenship, student leadership, professionalism, teamwork, and recognizes student achievement and excellence.
Last May, as a junior, Irvin was recognized at EASTERN's Awards Night with the Straight A Award and the Director's Award. Last summer, Irvin volunteered his time to student teach for the Intro to Automotive and Collision Repair Summer Fun program at EASTERN. Irvin also volunteers at the Hatboro Union Library every Tuesday. He played football for Hatboro-Horsham High School, and soccer for the Hatboro Heat Soccer Club.
"Irvin is dedicated to his future profession," said Steve Parke, EASTERN's Collision Repair Technology Instructor. "He is focused, hard-working and professional. I have no doubt that he will achieve all of the goals he has set for himself."
Irvin's goal is to become an Automotive Refinisher. He is currently deciding between Universal Technical Institute or WyoTech to continue his collision repair education.

| Alumnus Spotlight - Elaina Leonardi
|
EASTERN 2012 Culinary Arts/Upper Moreland High School graduate, Elaina Leonardi, just completed her first semester at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). She is currently pursuing her Bachelor's degree at IUP's Academy of Culinary Arts, with a focus on Baking and Pastry Arts.
Once Leonardi completes the classroom portion of her program, she plans to take full advantage of IUP's externship program. The externship program allows students to work at a resort or club across the United States. IUP assists with arranging this opportunity. Ultimately she would like to have a successful career as a pastry chef at her own bakery.
In her search for the right post-secondary program, Leonardi visited several universities. After seeing several classes and kitchens, she felt most at home at IUP. She also prefers their small classroom environment.
Leonardi heard about EASTERN through a presentation made to the 10th grade class at Upper Moreland High School. The timing was right since she had begun developing a growing interest in cooking and baking. She excelled as an EASTERN Culinary Arts student, being named Student of the Month in February 2012, and the SkillsUSA 2011 - 2012 School-Wide President.
"Come visit the Culinary Arts program at EASTERN on a regular school day and ask questions," said Leonardi. "Seeing the hands-on processes, techniques and knife skills are what make the program exceptional. My EASTERN Instructors, Chef Marucheck and Chef Albert, encouraged me to continue my education, and helped me find the right program."
While she is home for winter break, Leonardi is assisting the EASTERN chefs with instruction and working at a nursing home in Montgomeryville developing the menu for those with restrictive diets.

 | Upcoming Events at EASTERN - EASTERN Foundation Happy Hour/Meal Fundraiser
|
The EASTERN Foundation is holding a happy hour (actually, it's three hours) at Mike's Bar and Grill on March 21, 2013 from 5 - 8 p.m. The fundraiser will also include silent auction items, live acoustic music, and a 50/50 raffle.
Mike's Bar and Grill will section off a part of the dining area specifically for the EASTERN Foundation fundraiser from 5 - 8 p.m., and will donate 15 percent of total sales if sales are $1,000 or more. If sales are less than $1,000, then Mike's will donate 10 percent.
If you are unable to attend during the 5 - 8 p.m. time frame, but still want to assist, you can come to Mike's any time during the day and the Foundation will still get credit if you use the coupon below. Takeout orders count too! Please pass along the attached coupon and help the EASTERN Foundation spread the word about this new fundraising event.
The EASTERN Foundation has one reason for existing - to encourage students in their pursuit of career ambitions that were developed and strengthened by attending EASTERN. The Foundation does this by rewarding student success and achievement through scholarships and awards which are presented in May at our Annual Awards Night.
The Foundation thanks you for your consideration and support.

Inside EASTERN - EASTERN Faculty and Staff Hold Collection to Benefit the Pajama Program
|
EASTERN faculty and staff members held a pajama and book drive throughout the month of December to benefit the Pajama Program. They collected 28 pairs of pajamas and 16 books to benefit those in need during the cold winter season.
The Pajama Program collection has been a holiday tradition at EASTERN for many years, beginning with the efforts of Ellen Ainge, who retired in 2010. Since Ainge retired, she has continued to assist EASTERN with the pajama and book drive.
The Pajama Program, a 501(c)(3) organization, provides comfort and love in the way of new pajamas and new books to children in need, many waiting and hoping to be adopted. Snuggling up in new, warm pajamas with their very own book to read gives lonely children a secure and nurturing bedtime environment. The Pajama Program depends on the support of volunteers, supporters, event hosts, pajama drive sponsors, and of course, donations of cozy new pajamas and new children's books.
"The Pajama Project is a great organization, and since helping children is what we do here at EASTERN, this program seemed like the perfect fit for us," said Allison Larson, EASTERN's Supervisor of Career and Technical Education. "Our hope is that these pajamas and books make the holiday season a little brighter for those in need."
