Student Success - Shawn Moore; October Student of the Month

Shawn Moore is the October 2012 Student

of the Month at Eastern Center for Arts and Technology (EASTERN). He is in his second year of EASTERN's Computer Network Administration program and a senior at Upper Moreland High School. The Student of the Month Award is sponsored by EASTERN's faculty, Joint Committee and the Willow Grove Rotary Club to highlight student excellence, success and service. Ten students each year are selected for this honor.

At EASTERN, Shawn maintains outstanding grades in the Computer Network Administration program, and is actively involved in SkillsUSA as a 2012 - 2013 SkillsUSA Pennsylvania State Officer. He was also part of the team that received first-place for the SkillsUSA District Competitions Opening/Closing Ceremonies. In 2011, Shawn was selected by his Computer Network Administration Instructor, Karon Crickmore, to attend the Annual District 2 Career and Technical Student Organization's (CTSO) Leadership Conference at the Pocono Manor Resort. SkillsUSA is a national student organization promoting good citizenship, student leadership, professionalism, teamwork, and recognizes student achievement and excellence.

Shawn's interest in computers grew in middle school. In eighth grade he attended the "Inside a PC" program at EASTERN through the Summer Fun program for middle school students. Through EASTERN's Computer Network Administration program, Shawn will earn 12 credits through a dual enrollment partnership with Montgomery County Community College.

After graduation from EASTERN and Upper Moreland High School, Shawn plans to continue his computer networking education at either New York Institute of Technology or Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

 Alumnus Spotlight - Felicia Perretti

EASTERN 2006 Commercial Art/Abington High School graduate, Felicia Perretti, is currently the staff photographer for QVC. She also owns and operates her own food photography business based out of Philadelphia, Perretti Photography (www.perrettiphotography.com). Currently, her food photography is on the cover of the Boston Globe accompanying an article entitled, The Fickle Food Shopper.

After graduation from EASTERN and Abington High School, Perretti continued her photography education at the Art Institute of Philadelphia. While in college, Perretti assisted many professional photographers working in the field and strived to gain as much knowledge about the photography field as possible.

For many years Perretti worked at a supermarket part-time. Through this job, she made contacts that assisted her in obtaining her first internship while in college - for a local food marketing company that handled photography and graphics for food companies.

Through Perretti Photography, which has been in business for the past three years, Perretti shoots food photography for Suburban Life, Philadelphia Weekly, Beverage Industry, SJ Magazine, Le Bus Bakery, Sunoco, and numerous restaurants in Philadelphia.

"My most recent job with the Boston Globe was a great opportunity. It was very exciting to get the call! The key is to market your skills to the right people and stand out from the crowd," said Perretti. "For students interested in Commercial Art at EASTERN, my advice is to follow your heart and your passion. Work at it every day. EASTERN provides the resources that build a great future."

EASTERN's Commercial Art program covers everything from conceptual drawing and design to a professional portfolio. Students learn the value and application of their unique styles in both design and illustration. Students use industry standard software on the Macintosh platform. Software used includes Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Dreamweaver and Flash.

Perretti Photography can be reached at 215-873-1110, or Felicia@Perrettiphotography.com. Become a fan of Perretti Photography on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/perrettiphotography, and follow her on Twitter @perrettiphoto.

Inside EASTERN - SkillsUSA Supports Hurricane Sandy Relief

The SkillsUSA school-wide officers have chosen the American Red Cross for the victims of Hurricane Sandy as their community service project for the year.

"Hurricane Sandy has affected all of us here at EASTERN in one way or another, but most of us have been very fortunate.  We may have lost power for a while (or days) or experienced some basement flooding, but we at least have a roof over our heads," said Karon Crickmore, EASTERN Computer Network Administration instructor and SkillsUSA Advisor.  "People in New York City and in New Jersey were not as fortunate, and we want to help."

On Friday, November 9, the SkillsUSA school-wide officers will be collecting donations at EASTERN from students, faculty, staff. If you wish to donate to the Hurricaine Sandy Relief fund, please contact Ms. Crickmore at KCrickmore@eastech.org or 215-784-4800, Ext. 270.
