August, 2012

Greetings!

Welcome to the August Cirrostratus Group Newsletter.

My article on selecting Open Source Software for SaaS is a great resource for understanding what is important when making a software selection. Gartner's new Hype Cycle for Cloud Computing just came out in August and Louis Columbus, a regular contributor on Forbes.com, has a great summary. User adoption is always a challenge and my recent blog post outlines some suggestions of how to approach this challenge for B2B SaaS offerings.

Please contact me if I can be of assistance to you or your organization. I would be very interested in hearing about your plans for the Cloud.

My article in Open Source Delivers gives Three Tips for Selecting  Open Source Software for SaaS. Open Source Delivers is a great resource on current Open Source topics. Open Source Software (OSS) selection is not just a technical selection, it is also a business decision. Understanding the OSS community around the software you are considering is an important step in the process. A downloadable copy of the article is available here.

Gartner Hype Cycle for Cloud Computing

Gartner Hype Cycle

Gartner recently released the Cloud Computing Hype Cycle for 2012. This article written by Louis Columbus on Forbes.com, analyzes the results from this years hype cycle and contains the major charts from Gartner. Software as a Service is now well into the "Slope of Enlightenment" and Infrastructure as a Service is coming out of the "Trough of Disillusionment". Platform as a Service is now at the "Peak of Inflated Expectations" which is why there has been so much press lately on that topic.

I've found that the Hype Cycle can help with filtering the technology press articles to understand whether the expectations and problems outlined are real or not. The "Years to Adoption" chart can also be quite helpful to understand Gartner's view of the timing of when certain cloud technology will be in mainstream use.

Gartner's market size and growth projections show that SaaS will continue to be the biggest part of the Cloud market at least through 2016.
Three Keys to Successful SaaS User Adoption

Many Business to Business (B2B) SaaS solutions are far more complex than business to consumer solutions and require a more complex approach to user adoption. User adoption is critical to the B2B SaaS provider profitability through reduced customer churn, higher number of users, and increased up-sell opportunities.

To learn about three keys to successful SaaS user adoption check out my recent blog post.
