Gartner Hype Cycle for Cloud Computing
Gartner recently released the Cloud Computing Hype Cycle for 2012. This article written by Louis Columbus on Forbes.com, analyzes the results from this years hype cycle and contains the major charts from Gartner. Software as a Service is now well into the "Slope of Enlightenment" and Infrastructure as a Service is coming out of the "Trough of Disillusionment". Platform as a Service is now at the "Peak of Inflated Expectations" which is why there has been so much press lately on that topic.
I've found that the Hype Cycle can help with filtering the technology press articles to understand whether the expectations and problems outlined are real or not. The "Years to Adoption" chart can also be quite helpful to understand Gartner's view of the timing of when certain cloud technology will be in mainstream use.
Gartner's market size and growth projections show that SaaS will continue to be the biggest part of the Cloud market at least through 2016.
