Using metrics as a roadmap to improving your SaaS business can be very effective. Metrics are also used by investors and others to value your business and compare it to other investment alternatives. Selecting the appropriate metrics, having the right targets and developing and implementing improvement plans are all important steps to that success.  I recently read this book on SaaS by Merrill "Rick" Chapman and found it to be an excellent resource. I wrote a review which is available here and the review is titled "The Death of Traditional Software Product Management" which is the subtitle to the book's first chapter.
