Project Partner Spotlight:
Groundswell Center for Local Food & Farming
By Sharon Clarke

Spring is always a busy time for farmers and gardeners. At the  Groundswell Center for Local Food & Farming, we've been busy, too!

The beginning of the season saw the conclusion of our second Farm Business Course. It is truly inspiring to watch the development of new farmer business ideas throughout the course. This session was no different. Keep your eyes open for the emergence of a whole new crop of Groundswell-grown farm businesses. They'll be offering products like traditional cider apples, local hops for brewing beer, a full-diet CSA, and more!

Speaking of new farmers... Growing a genuinely regional good food system means supporting the training of new farmers. With that in mind, we've launched our new Grow Your Farmer membership campaign this month. Our ambitious goal is raise $24,000 by the end of autumn. We invite everyone in the community who cares about good food to join as a Groundswell member. We are also working in many ways to become a more truly community-supported and supporting organization. It's at the heart of all we do.

Groundswell's First Homestead Farmers and Gardeners' Gathering
Groundswell's first Homestead Farmers and Gardeners' Gathering.

May 19 saw the first of our Homestead Farmers and Gardeners' Gathering on the quarter-acre Lansing
homestead of Philip Snyder (former director of CRESP). The day was tremendous fun and a great learning experience for folks who are serious about growing their own food. And it was a wonderful opportunity for new Groundswell members to meet each other!

This month's Homestead Gathering will be on Sunday, June 16, 3:30 - 5:30 PM, at the homestead of Steve Austin, the ITHACA Permaculture Demonstration Site. This diverse garden oasis is nestled into the landscape with a timber framed pergola, terraced edible plant guilds, a constructed natural stream, two ponds, a stone patio, and a four season greenhouse. Part of the energy systems includes PV panels on the garden pergola that let light shine through. In both the outdoor ponds, the small greenhouse and basement food is grown using "Aquaponics". All are part of an integrative and sustainable design system known as Permaculture. Each element performs many functions. Each important function is supported by many elements.

This event is free to Groundswell Members, and $10 for non-members. Call 607-319-5095 to register, or send an email to info@groundswellcenter.

EcoVillage at Ithaca--Center for Sustainability Education (EVI-CSE)

EVI-CSE is hosting an Open House for the TREE Neighborhood on Sat. June 29th, from 2-5pm, to be followed by an in-depth discussion for green builders and others interested in Passive House techniques.

The  Third Residential EcoVillage Experience neighborhood, nicknamed "TREE" is growing quickly on West Hill. The first seven houses are almost complete, and of these, five are expected to achieve Passive House certification - which has been described as the highest building standard in the world. TREE homes will be so energy efficient that they need no central heating, although there will be a few linear feet of electric baseboard heating for the very coldest, cloudiest winter days.

The remaining 33 units soon to be under construction will consist of 18 compact two to three bedroom houses, and a four story apartment building will house 15 one to three bedroom apartments. As with the other two cohousing neighborhoods at EcoVillage, there will be extensive common facilities, including a 4000 square foot "Common House" which will include a large kitchen and dining room, sitting room, children's play area, multi-purpose room and laundry. EcoVillage residents enjoy sharing several dinners a week, extensive gardens, ponds, hiking trails and more. There is an emphasis on sharing, whether it is a flock of chickens, tools, or even car use. Because of this emphasis, a recent study by a Rutgers graduate student showed that EcoVillage residents use only 30% of the resources of typical Americans for food, fuel, transportation and housing.

Visitors to the Open House will be able to walk through several completed homes before move-ins. In addition to the Open House, EcoVillage is offering its regular Free Public Tour of the first two neighborhoods at 3pm. Visitors are welcome to go to both events, and if they are really interested, stay afterwards for more in-depth discussion and Q&A on Passive House and lessons learned about green building.

EcoVillage at Ithaca is located on Rachel Carson Way, off Route 79 West, approximately 2 miles from downtown Ithaca. For more information about the Open House, or TREE, please contact the EcoVillage Visitor Coordinator or visit the TREE website.
