This first full week of October is National Baby Wearing Week! And we have decided to include it into our #MindfulParent theme this month! I wore my baby practically until she was 3, ok, that is a bit of an exaggeration, but I did use my ergo carrier until she was 3, in airports.... I loved wearing Roma, it felt so safe and secure, and she was always happiest that way. I believe it is a step into being mindful, as when you are carrying a baby you are more aware of her on your being, you take care in how you move, and you connect. Mindfulness is about becoming aware of each moment fully as it is occurring. Not reacting, but taking the time to choose how to act. This is a very helpful practice to have just in life in general, makes it less stressful, but also it helps us to be the best parents possible. I truly believe that. Take a look at some of the great pieces we are highlighting this month on the blog and then on our site all month long. Let's see if we can encourage each other on how to practice mindfulness. And thank you to Ergo Baby for sponsoring weekly giveaways this month!

Mindful Parenting and a Joyful Connection
by Christina Soletti for Ergobaby

Task many parents if they seek a connection or an attachment to their child and most would agree that they would. And attachment to our children begins literally in the womb, but once the cord is cut, the process of attachment takes on a different form. Humans are dependent on their caregivers in those first days; we have the longest childhood of any species.

What Exactly Is Mindful Parenting Anyway?
by Jill Campbell, Psy.D., Staff Psychologist a
The Pump Station & Nurtury
What does it mean to parent mindfully? There are many definitions on mindful parenting, and while they are indeed valid, I often feel they end up sounding vague. For example, "Parenting mindfully means parenting consciously with awareness of what the present moment requires." Now while this certainly is true, what exactly does this mean? Another definition I have heard is, "Mindful parenting means parenting with open eyes and an open heart." Sounds simple, right? But, um, how exactly do you do that? I am not putting these definitions down because I do wholeheartedly agree with them, but when sitting to write this blog, I thought how could I best convey mindful parenting to the people reading it? I came to the conclusion that it might be more helpful for me to give an example from my own life. Now I am certainly not the "perfect parent," and by the way, I will gladly pay you a million dollars if you can introduce me to one, but I have been practicing mindfulness for quite sometime now (notice the word practice, because mindfulness is a practice that you never perfect). So here is one example where I was able to some definition in my mindfulness muscle:

Mindfulness During Pregnancy and as a Mama
by Alisa B. Donner, MSW, LCSW Co-Founder of Pregnancy Awareness Month, and Mom to an Amazing Wonder
Seems like the new buzzword is mindfulness. And I must admit, as a yogini with a 15 year practice, I like this trend. Mindfulness as a mama or during pregnancy is really about the same thing, it is about being aware and paying attention to what is happening right now. #MindfulParent
When you are pregnant, you get into a zone that is very unique. In the past I have referred to it as internal. Pregnancy is a time in which you instinctively turn inward. You are reflective. You move slower. Your breath moves slower. Even your mind joins in that pace, some of us refer to it as pregnancy brain. I had the most amazing experiences meditating while I was pregnant. In fact, I'm positive that I may have reached the most peaceful places when I meditated concentrating on my belly, and placing my hands on my growing baby in my body and breathing. I would sing to her when I was alone.
