September is Baby Safety Month!

An important topic is our theme this month, Baby Safety. It ties in nicely with a National Baby Safety week earlier in the month, and Child Passenger Safety Week which starts on the 15th. It can be tough to talk about the need to prevent injuries in car accidents, and other household injuries including choking, poisoning, or drowning. It just doesn't connote joy, like breastfeeding month did in August, or Dad's Month in June.... I believe that this information and education is important, because it can save lives, and in the end, that IS what we are promoting, right?

Pregnancy Awareness Month originally focused on bringing light to the need to think, plan, and educate yourself while pregnant to not only have a fabulous 40 weeks, but also to help prepare you to be a parent. It is with that mission that we focus on prevention of accidental injuries and encourage you to plan to have a safe home for your family.

There are some amazing blog posts featured in this newsletter, and more to come during the month on our site. We have 2 social media events with pediatricians as experts to answer any questions you may have about safety: September 15th our #SafeBaby Twitter Party sponsored by Britax will feature Dr. Nina Shapiro as well as the non-profit, Safe Kids. And later in the month on Facebook, we will have another chat (September 23rd at 7pm) with Dr. Tanya Altmann. We trust you will take advantage of all our expert opinions and chats this month.

Preventing Injuries in Babies
- 7 Ways

This month we are focusing on National Child Safety.  We will be hosting a Twitter Party next week with special guests @SafeKidsUSA  They are an amazing non-profit that provides so much education and information on keeping kids and babies safe!  Earlier this month they published a blog listing 7 Easy Ways to prevent injuries and keep your kids safe.  This post is chock full of information and video demos on how to install a car seat, secure televisions, prevent accidental choking or poisoning, consider your fire escape plan, avoid distractions when driving, and for the older child in sports, head injuries.

Could You Save a Little Life If You Needed To?

by Alisa Donner, MSW, LCSW with Contributions

from The Pump Station & Nurtury™

Sounds like a scary question, but it is an important one, Could you Save a little life if you needed to?  As parents, we have to ask ourselves that, and make time to consider it and talk to each other about it.  It isn't as enticing as visions of breastfeeding or walking in a park with your new state of the art stroller or baby jogger.  Parenting brings it all on, the responsibility goes beyond feeding and diapers or course, we know that.  But do we plan for it?

Pediatrician Tips on How to Prevent Choking in Babies/Toddlers

by Alisa Donner, MSW, LCSW with Contributions

from Dr. Nina Shapiro

We continue to drive the message of baby safety this month.  Many thanks to
Dr. Nina Shapiro, Director of Pediatric Otolaryngology at UCLA for partnering with us in some blogs this month as well as in ourupcoming Twitter Party on Monday September 15th - #SafeBaby.

As any of us with children know, babies and toddlers put EVERYTHING they grab directly into their mouths.  I'm totally serious.  So for the first time pregnant mom's-to-be, please consider that as you do your final sweeps thru your homes with your partner before the baby comes.  Any small objects as well as any breakable objects that can be grabbed must go into storage.  Yes, your infant won't be crawling or walking anytime soon, BUT, you will be SUPER TIRED by the time they are, and use your prep time to the max BEFORE BABY arrives.  Just a helpful hint from moi.

Keeping Your Little Ones Safe While You Are On The Road

by Britax

With Baby Safety Month here and Child Passenger Safety Week quickly approaching (Sept. 14-20), Sarah Tilton, Britax Child Passenger Safety Advocacy Manager, wants to make sure parents are well informed of the best ways to keep children safe on the road.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for kids ages one through 12 years old. In addition, three out of four kids are not as properly secured in a vehicle because their car seats are not correctly installed. Child Passenger Safety Week aims to educate caregivers on ways to improve these scary statistics, and ultimately save lives.
