We trust that you are all
enjoying the lazy hazy days of summer right about now as our newsletter hits your mailboxes. Back in the day when I was preggo I lived thru a few weeks of the heat with a full pregnant belly - it was not the best of times as far as comfort goes. Remember to stay hydrated this summer if you are pregnant, postpartum and nursing, or just in general, the heat is tolerated so much easier when we stay hydrated. If you are thirsty, it is past the time that you should have reached for a water, so start sipping ladies!

We have amazing tips on how to have fun in the sun with young ones, natural remedies for summertime burns and spills, and a fab giveaway happening NOW! Oh, and 2 local events that you CAN'T MISS if you are in LA.

The natural rhythm of the summer is slow and slower, so listen to that instinctual message and ENJOY!

Five Summer Water Play Ideas

by Alisa B. Donner, MSW, LCSW

When I think about my childhood summers, water play was a huge part of how my sister and spent our time. We loved nothing more than racing through the sprinkler on a late summer afternoon. It doesn't get much simpler than a sprinkler head attached to a hose, yet it provided countless hours of amusement for us.  We didn't need bells and whistles. We just needed  our family and a bit of water. Not much has changed in the past thirty years, because my kiddos love their sprinkler time just as much as I did. For me, summer really is about spending quality time with my family. And you can bet there is usually some water involved in said quality time. Come over to our house on the weekend and I bet you'll find us splashing around in the water at least once! This July at Pregnancy Awareness, we're focusing on summer funfamily travel and safety. In honor of this month's topics, we created Pinterest boards focused on each of them. Water play makes up a large chunk of our summer fun board and I've rounded up a slew of my favorite water play pins for you today: Click here to read more...

Keeping Kids & Moms
Happy on the Go

by Amy Marlow, MPH, RD, CDN, Nutrition Advisor, HAPPYFAMILY

Celebrate summer! Whether you're hitting the road for a family vacation or heading out to local parks and playgrounds for a staycation, planning ahead is key.   And that means never leaving home without plenty of snacks on hand for the kids.  Or if you are an expectant mom, sugar dips throughout the day, keep easy to grab snack ready for you too!

Standbys to Rely On

Some of our most flavorful fruits are in season and are great snacks for little fingers. Fresh fruit like strawberries, blueberries and blackberries, and sweet cherries (since kids have a natural sweet tooth) are easy to eat on-the-go.

Sunburns, Bug Bites, Bumps & Bruises...It Must Be Summer

by Sara Chana Silverstein, IBCLC, RH (AHG)

I love summer...the sunshine, warm days and outdoor adventures, but as a mother of seven I've had my fair share of kvetchy children. Below are my favorite ways to cure the ouchies naturally.Oh and for the preggo mama...sunburn and the reduction of aches and pains brought on by inflammation can be relieved by many items from the list below.  And for the infant, please keep them out of the sun with sunhats, covers over their stroller - carseat - or baby sling.  Got questions?  Ask me on Twitter or my website, or contact your medical provider.  OK ,now for the list: Sunburn Relief

Expectant & New Parent Summer Safety Tips

by Alisa B. Donner, MSW, LCSW

Summer is about
FUN & GAMES, and SUN & SWIMMING, and BBQ & POOL PARTIES.  With all the outdoor activities come an increased risk of accidents or injury. As expectant moms or new parents, we have to think about this stuff, even if I kind of sound like a "Debbie Downer".  I have worked in the medical world as a Social Worker for 25 years...OMG...and I am also a mom to a 9 year old....OMG...so I have some personal and professional experience with this.  No big scary statistics will be thrown at you in this post, promise!
