 Toilet Teaching:
A Gentle Guide to

Parents of toddlers in diapers are often uncertain as to how to begin the toilet training process. They often ask, "At what age should I begin to toilet train my child?" "How do I know if my child is ready?" "What method should I use?" This toilet-teaching workshop is designed to help parents learn the physiological, cognitive, emotional, social and verbal signs that indicate when your child is ready to learn how to use the potty. It will address the gentle, progressive steps to take in the toilet training process, and how to deal with resistance and problems that you may encounter along the way. We will discuss the disadvantages to trying to toilet train your child too early, and how to keep pressure and power struggles out of the process so that your child will be motivated for success.

Few new parenting decisions are as stressful and controversial as the choices parents make regarding their infant's sleep. With so many conflicting opinions on sleep from books, professionals, family and friends, it can be overwhelming for parents to choose the best sleep approach for their family. We all know that sleep is important for your infant's growth and development, but while sleep itself is a natural process, developing healthy sleep habits is a learned skill. This gentle workshop is designed for parents of newborns to help them start to put good sleep habits into practice so that as their baby grows and develops, he or she will have the tools for healthy sleep. This workshop will address the following sleep questions and issues:
Sleep Safety and SIDS
- How much sleep should my newborn be getting?
- What can I expect for my baby's sleep now and in the future?
- How can I start to establish good sleep habits now?
- How can I maximize my baby's sleep?

This workshop covers the developmental window from 10 months to 2 years when the toddler experiences an initial desire for autonomy over his/her world and how this translates into food refusals. The instructor offers concrete suggestions for overcoming food refusals through simple, easy-to -follow guidelines that satisfy the toddler's desire to maintain control, while opening the door for him/her to choose new foods. Tips on normal toddler eating, how to model preferred/positive behaviors, and the rhythm of mealtimes and snacks to improve compliance are also discussed.
