Linn Boyke, Dog Behavior Expert

Congratulations! You are expecting a (or have a new) baby and one of the most asked questions is...."How will my dog react to the baby?" The answer lays way Beyond the Dog, because the truth is that the preparation and responsibility is with the dog parents. I have encountered countless clients over the years that have been backed into a situation where the owner had not known they needed to prepare the dog for all the changes in the household and their long loved family pet ends up being given away or even worse in a shelter due to what is perceived as "aggressive" behavior. Behind so-called aggression is confusion, a dog's natural dog state is to please their family and through preparation, consistency and boundaries - families can all live in perfect harmony together, including the family pet.
  1. You're Pregnant....begin the training NOW! One of the most challenging situations I encounter is when a client waits to prepare their dog until the week before the baby is due. You, as parents, have had nine whole months to prepare for the big life change that is baby. Make sure to give your dog the same nine months of preparation; it will make all the difference. Did you know that Pediatricians and physical therapists are concerned that babies are spending too much time on their backs when they are awake? Parents are encouraged to get their babies to spend at least 30 minutes a day on their tummies while they are awake. We call this "Tummy Time". Parents sometimes forget how important it is to have their infants spend time on their tummies. However it is often difficult to get babies to play in this position. Babies generally resist "Tummy Time" and may protest loudly when parents turn them over. Babies who have not been put on their tummies from the very beginning may experience this as an unfamiliar position and they don't like what is unfamiliar.

Come to our "Tummy Time" workshop and learn how to get your baby to LOVE "Tummy Time". We will give you ideas and activities you can utilize at home, some of which we will practice during the workshop, to make sure your baby gets enough "Tummy Time" throughout the day. Our "Tummy Time" activities are enjoyable for both babies and parents. You and your baby will have fun!

Second time mothers will have an opportunity to ease their transition through honest sharing and exploration. The group gives second time mothers a chance to raise concerns and look at issues in a safe space. The weekly 90 minute group will approach each topic and developmental stage from a mindful parenting perspective, which is essentially a slowed-down, less reactive, more intentional and reflective process. Some of the topics addressed will be:
  • Helping your first child adjust to the new siblingSharing practical information to help families raising more than one child
  • Find new ways to improve your time management skills
Make time for yourself and your relationship/partner
  • Develop practical strategies for balancing work and home life
Learn to feel good about yourself and your body
  • Meet other second time moms in neighborhood!
  • Explore ways to nurture the relationship between your children

Have Milk Will Travel

Have Milk,

Will Travel: Adventures in Breastfeeding

The Pump Station & Nurtury™ founders Corky Harvey and Wendy Haldeman wrote the forewords for Have Milk, Will Travel: Adventures in Breastfeeding, a new book of laugh-out-loud stories about life as the one-stop milk shop. And even better: half of the stories come from our The Pump Station™ moms!

This month's excerpt comes from Maria Polonchek, who blogs at

writingbetweenfriends.com. When she was pregnant, Maria writes, "I assumed breastfeeding would come easily and that I might even have moments of euphoria I've heard described by other mothers. Even when I found out I was having twins, when people really started to question my decision, I didn't think twice. Two boobies, two babies, right? I couldn't get more efficient if I tried."

"I was not prepared for the phenomenon that is 'over-production."

Check out Have Milk, Will Travel, available at your local The Pump Station & Nurtury store for the rest of this milky story. Click here to get your copy today!
