Hi mamas and families,

Welcome to Pregnancy Awareness 2014.  We are excited to relaunch our monthly newsletter. Last week was Valentine's Day, what do you think of with that? Of course we think of hearts and love, and nationally this month is focused on Women's Heart Health, so we are emphasizing the same theme for our February newsletter. What does heart health mean during pregnancy and being a new parent? We believe rest, appropriate exercise, eating organic whole foods, and living as stress free a life as possible are all contributors. Enjoy the articles and let us know your thoughts.

Have A Heart, Drink A Smoothie

Alisa B. Donner, MSW, LCSW, Co-Founder of PAM and mom to an amazing wonder.

I think drinking a homemade smoothie is a great way to consume vital vitamins and nutrients. They sure taste great - I'm NOT talking about Jamba Juice here people!

Smoothies are WAY easier to make then you think, all you need is a powerful blender (VitaMix, Blentec, Bullet, Ninja) and some fresh ingredients, and woot, you are ready to go!

I asked my dear friend, Jill, who is one of my go-to mom's in my hood when it comes to eating healthy. She also makes a delicious smoothie. At Pregnancy Awareness we look to kitchen table knowledge, hand-on experience by being a mom, as well as the professional with degrees and licenses, etc.

Stress + Pregnancy:
Changing the Equation
Nkem Ndefo, RN, CNN
We all know that too much stress feels bad. As if feeling bad wasn't enough, it is actually dangerous to our physical and mental health. That's because stress isn't just a feeling. When we are stressed, there are significant changes in our neurological, immune, and hormone systems. If the stress is short term and we can return to a relaxed state, no harm done. But when stress is ongoing these biological changes can wreak havoc. From anxiety to frequent colds and even increased incidence of cardiovascular disease, chronic stress touches every body system. This is no different in pregnancy with stress contributing to spontaneous miscarriage, preterm birth, and low birth weight. And for a developing baby to be bathed in excess stress hormones can mean abnormal neurological development, increased rates of infections, and later mood and behavioral problems. Keep Your Baby Healthy
During Pregnancy
Lisa Druxman
In honor of February's Heart Health month, I share with you how to keep yourself and your baby healthy during pregnancy!  We are fortunate enough to now know that exercise is a wonderful thing for both mom and baby during pregnancy.  Gone are the days of yore, when pregnancy was seen as a state of sickness. Finally, we are blessed to be in a time where exercise is actually encouraged!
