So, you're sitting in a big circle of moms, all with babies the same age as yours, and the class leader asks, "how many babies in here hate tummy time?" You're surprised and secretly relieved to see that all but one hand goes shooting up and heads start to nod vigorously. Ohhhh, so it's not just my baby. . . none of them like it . . . . yet! It's always a relief to learn that your baby is perfectly normal and it turns out that the one mom who didn't raise her hand, has a baby who is a few weeks older than the rest and she's been "working" on tummy time for a while. "Trust me, my baby hated it in the beginning too!"
So what's the big deal? Do we have to "work" on tummy time and if so, how do we help our babies get comfortable and eventually, come to love it?
Let's talk first about the benefits of tummy time and why it's so important....Click here to read full blog.

Tummy Time Fun with Lindsay Anderson, LCSW & Claudia Kerns, PT January 24th at 1pm in Westlake Village. Call 805-777-7179 to register. For Newborns - 6 month old babies
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends, "Back to sleep, tummy to play," but is that really happening? Babies are now spending too much time on their backs and in various seats, which can lead to a wide range of developmental delays as well as an increase in cases of "flat head." Frequent opportunities throughout the day, building up to an hour of supervised playtime, known as 'tummy time,' is important for gross and fine motor and cognitive development. It also creates the foundation for future crawling and walking. Many parents avoid 'tummy time' because their baby doesn't seem to like it or gets frustrated in this position quite quickly.
We invite you and your baby to attend this unique tummy time class where you will learn practical tips and solutions that will promote gross motor, fine motor, sensory motor and visual development. In this class, you will experience new ways to easily integrate tummy time into your baby's daily routine in a playful, and interactive setting with the support and guidance of a pediatric physical therapist along with an infant and child development specialist. Parents will leave knowing concrete, developmentally appropriate strategies for pleasurable and purposeful tummy time play. Click here for more class info.

By Tiffany Howsam, MFT I remember when one of my best friends told me that she had suffered from postpartum depression (PPD) after having her first child. She didn't tell me this until several years later. I had no idea she was suffering. It wasn't until after I had my first child that I felt the weight of her experience. Although I felt ready to be a mother and felt tremendous love for my baby, the transition to motherhood was difficult enough without the burden of anxiety and or depression. I knew then that I wanted to help women and families adjust to life with a baby. What could be more important than the health of moms and babies! For this reason, I'm very happy to announce that I will be leading a new support group at The Pump Station™ to help moms with these challenges.
As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I focused my private practice on pregnancy and postpartum related issues. I attended conferences, professional trainings and read all that I could about postpartum depression and anxiety. What surprised me most was learning that Postpartum Depression and Anxiety is the number one complication of childbirth, yet no one was talking about it!At the time, there wasn't a lot of media exposure and there was still a lot of shame and judgment around PPD. About a year later, Brooke Shields came out with her memoir, "Down Came the Rain," an excellent book describing her experience with Postpartum Depression. She really normalized the experience so many moms have gone through but weren't able to talk about... New Moms' Drop-in Support Group
(pre-crawlers only)
Mondays from 3- 4:15pm- Westlake
Thursdays from 1- 2:15pm- Santa Monica Having a baby is a time of joy and celebration, but becoming a new mother in today's world can be hard. While this time is of course filled with love and wonder, it can also be filled with pressure and confusion. You have to say good-bye to your old life and your old self while you are learning a whole new role that you might not yet have confidence in. As new mothers, we often have an unrealistic image in our heads of being this perfect mother who always knows exactly what do to and how to be.
Our drop-in groups include:
- An open Q & A discussion forum led by a licensed clinical psychologist.
- Songs, exercises, music and movement to help promote your baby's development and have fun!
- A peaceful, non-judgmental atmosphere where you will meet other new moms like yourself and gain an on-going support system.
Prenatal Drop-in Support Group Mondays from 6:30pm-7:30pm - Westlake Village
Thursdays from 6:00pm-7:00pm - Santa Monica
You are expecting your first child, congratulations! You have probably been busy finding a good obstetrician and doula, taking childbirth preparation and baby care classes, and getting your baby registry together. But what have you done to take care of yourself? Everyone tells you that once your baby arrives, your life will be forever changed. Intellectually you understand this, but have you had time to emotionally and psychologically prepare and process this? Attend our prenatal support group and do just that. Our prenatal support group is designed to be a place to come, share and explore not only your pregnancy, but also your soon-to-be new role as mother in a relaxed, supportive environment. Groups are led by a licensed clinical psychologist in non-judgmental atmosphere. Here you can ask questions, gain information, and share your expectations and fears with other expectant mothers. Start building your village now so that when your new baby arrives you will already have a solid support system in place!

January 26th from 1-4pm For babies 4-8 Months old $145 per individual or $195 per couple
Babies love to learn - and when it comes to sleep, most babies learn very quickly once they have the right tools and supports! In this workshop, we'll provide you with in-depth, personalized information about your child's age, developmental needs, and personality. Then, we'll help you create a customized, step-by-step plan for solving nap and nighttime sleep problems that incorporates your family's needs and preferences. We do not believe in letting a child "cry it out" alone - instead, we help parents find a middle ground between allowing their child to learn and offering love and support throughout the process. Our methods work well whether you are cosleeping or whether your child is sleeping independently. Let us help restore balance and harmony to your family! Help Your Child Learn How to
