Spotlight: Chicago YSA Field Day

The 2013 Chicago YSA Spring Field Day was a Success!
On Saturday May 18th, Chicago YSA hosted more than 250 kids from 11 local elementary schools at Humboldt Park for an action-packed field day event. Each of the 12 Chicago-area Big Ten Alumni associations helped to run an activity station, with the kids participating in activities ranging from tug-of-war to water-balloon volleyball to an inflatable obstacle course!  The Field Day has been established to promote a healthy and active lifestyle, while at the same time, bringing together the Big Ten alumni community to expose underserved children to the idea of higher education in a positive and engaging format.

Congratulations to the team from St. Columbanus, which took first place for the second consecutive year.  St. Columbanus, led by Mr. Darrell Scott, represented the Iowa Hawkeyes for the day and we are so proud of all of the students for working as a team to post the highest combined score.

Congratulations also to Galapagos Chart School, which won the team spirit award for being the most enthusiastic and encouraging group.  Students from Galapagos represented the University of Illinois.

A Special Thank You to our Partners!
Thank you to the Chicago-area Alumni associations, our YSA volunteers and this year's parter organizations: Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital, Big Ten Network, Gatorade, Quaker Oats Company, and Sports Authority.  We would also like to offer a special thank you to Northwestern Athletics and the three Northwestern football players who came down to play with the kids and share their message of how physical fitness and a good education have helped shape success in their lives.  Thank you Davion, Will and Terrance!

NFL Play 60 Spring Football Clinic
Chicago YSA partnered with UNO Charter Schools for the third consecutive year to organize and lead a four-week introduction to flag football clinic, sponsored in part by NFL Play 60 and the Chicago Bears. The clinic, which ended ran on Saturday mornings in April and May, was offered to children grades 3 through 6 attending UNO Charter Schools on the Southwest side of Chicago.  Thank you to Matt Smith and the parent volunteers who coordinated on the school's behalf!  For more on the great work Matt and his team are doing at UNO please click on the following link:
