Celiac Disease, Gluten and POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome):

An Undiscovered Connection?

Adeline was so tired that at the age of 12 she couldn't find the energy to run around a baseball field during PE. The fatigue was affecting her concentration, grades and life. Getting to school was a struggle, and making it through, nearly impossible. Jace, 17, was experiencing dizziness and palpitations when he stood for any prolonged period of time.  His legs ached when he stood. Taking a shower made his pain worse. Standing in line for anything was intolerable; his legs turned a purplish color and he became exhausted until he could sit down.  Claire, 35, had headaches that weren't responding to multiple treatments, and hot weather made them worse. Ruby, 37, suffered from persistent brain fog.  Her blood pressure often "ran low" and her doctor told her this was "healthy." She felt awful. Despite the wide range in ages and symptoms, these patients of mine* are connected by one explanation.  Read more

Stanford Launches Genetic Study on Celiac Disease with Plenty of Volunteers

Great job, national celiac community! Stanford University put out a call for volunteers for its genetic study just two weeks ago and received a high level of response. Special thanks to the Celiac Disease Foundation for helping spread the word!

Here's a statement of appreciation from the Stanford team:

"We would like to thank all the people who have responded and expressed interest in the study. Our research would not be possible without you. Because of the overwhelming response from the community, we do not need additional participants at this time. If you have already responded to express your interest, thank you. We are still working to get through the emails and will respond as soon as we can."

Celiac disease has the attention of top scientists at Stanford, including an immunologist and a bioengineer. Read more about the research team and study goals in our article on the celiac genetic study.

Gluten-Free Vacation in West Sonoma County

By Vic Dolcourt

Northern California has a range of vacation offerings, from the big city bustle of the Bay Area to the secluded north coast Pacific beaches. Happily, there is a middle ground between the mob scene of Highway 101 and the almost hermit-like qualities of Salt Point State Beach. This is western Sonoma County and the wonderful small towns, antique shops, family wineries, artisan food producers and the Pacific Coast west of Santa Rosa. It is an easy trip from virtually anywhere in the Bay Area and Sacramento. The area offers gluten-free options, plenty of scenery, the ocean, beaches, roads that are easy to navigate, virtually no chain businesses, and interesting people who like it just that way - an ideal getaway.    Read more
