Should you trust gluten-free labels?

What do gluten-free labels and caution statements on packaged products really mean?  Should you pay attention to warnings such as "made in a shared facility" or are they simply legal jargon? Data from a new study by the FDA, which analyzed the gluten content of 461 packaged products, may help answer these questions.  Read more

Melinda's Gluten Free of Capitola
By Vic Dolcourt

Melinda's Gluten-Free was an open secret until June when Melinda Harrower and Hannah Balliet (pictured from left to right) opened their first retail shop on busy 41st Avenue in Capitola, a small city near Santa Cruz, California, on the Monterey Bay.

That Sunday event wasn't the grand opening of Melinda's and Hannah's bakery. They have been baking gluten-free breads and pastries since 2009 and distributing to retailers who sold to the public. If you've bought gluten-free at Aldo's Italian Bakery in nearby Soquel or donuts on Gluten-Free Fridays at Psycho Donuts in Campbell or San Jose, you've experienced the delights of Melinda's and Hannah's bakery. Read more

Listen up, hotels: Consider gluten free

Award-winning retired KTVU reporter Rita Williams has some tips for hotels

A road trip of 6700 miles in four weeks. Ah, retirement! As Crater Lake, Mt. Hood, Mt. Rainier, Portland, Yakima, Victoria, Jasper, Banff, Mt. Rushmore and oh, so much more beautiful country flashed by, I didn't have time to get sick. But I did have time to think about how easy it would be for hotels to help us keep from getting sick while traveling.

After 42 years as one of the nation's first female hard news TV reporters, I passed the microphone last year, leaving behind the long work weeks, stress and deadlines. But what I did not leave behind was gluten intolerance - celiac disease diagnosed by biopsy 25 years ago. It was tough back then, with no pre-packaged gluten-free foods to take with you on assignment, and never knowing day to day where you might wind up. Somehow, as with gender discrimination, I lived through it and made it work.  Read more

Send us your favorite doctors and dietitians

We are continuing to update our
physician list  and dietitian list for Northern California. If there is a physician or dietitian who has been particularly helpful to you in diagnosing and treating celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, please send us their full name and the city in which they practice. Let us know if you have questions.

*  If it's not easy to find them online, please include their contact info

*  If you like, please tell us why you found them helpful. Your name and comments will not be published - it's just helpful to us in referring people as needed.

*  At this time, we only provide listings for medical doctors (MDs) and registered dietitians (RDs)

*  Our foundation supports evidence-based diagnostic tests and procedures. We list medical practitioners who use labs and medical practices that are used by celiac disease centers at major medical facilities.

Participate in the CeliAction research study  The CeliAction Study is a clinical research study evaluating an investigational medication for celiac disease. The study will explore whether the study medication is able to improve the damage in the lining of the intestine caused by even the smallest traces of gluten. The study will also evaluate whether the investigational medication improves any symptoms of celiac disease compared to a placebo. While enrolled in the study, you will be asked to maintain the gluten-free diet you are currently on.

The CeliAction Study is sponsored by Alvine Pharmaceuticals in San Carlos, CA. The investigational study medication is called ALV003. ALV003 is a mixture of two different enzymes, which in a test tube can break down gluten into smaller pieces of protein.
