"Mild" Celiac Disease?

In this month's column, Dr. Burkhart discusses why the term "mild celiac disease" arises, and why it is a misnomer that can lead to serious health risks. 
 
I have seen several patients this month who were told by their practitioners that they only had a "mild" case of celiac disease. " What does that mean?" they ask me. Do they need a strict gluten-free diet? Do they really have to worry about cross contamination? Can they have gluten once in a while?  Are the long-term effects the same?  There seems to be a good deal of confusion about this topic. Read more

Miglet's Gluten Free Bakery and Grocery will be serving up Hot Dogs on Canyon Bakehouse Hot Dog Buns and Churros all day! We will be sampling and selling products from many local and national companies! As always there will be a cupcake eating contest, face painting and a coloring contest for the little ones! Bring your spare change to the party and donate to The Taylor Family Foundation's campaign, Coins for Campers!

Summer Camps:

 

Northern California

Camp Celiac at Camp Arroyo  - Camp registration is now full for both summer 2013 sessions. If you register now you will be on the waiting list for cancellations and still have a chance of going. We do get cancellations. The camp is located in the scenic foothills of Livermore, CA, and is administered by the Celiac Community Foundation of Northern California in a partnership with The Taylor Family Foundation. Each session is five days/four nights and costs only $25 due to the generosity of The Taylor Family Foundation, business sponsors and individual donors. Southern California

CDF Camp Gluten-Free at Camp Nawakwa  Registration for summer 2013 is open. The camp  is located in the beautiful San Bernardino Forest, and is administered by the Celiac Disease Foundation in partnership with Camp Fire. The camp costs $450 (financial aid available) and is open to ages 7-17. Visit the camp's website to learn more and register.
