 In this month's column, Dr. Burkhart discusses why the term "mild celiac disease" arises, and why it is a misnomer that can lead to serious health risks.
I have seen several patients this month who were told by their practitioners that they only had a "mild" case of celiac disease. " What does that mean?" they ask me. Do they need a strict gluten-free diet? Do they really have to worry about cross contamination? Can they have gluten once in a while? Are the long-term effects the same? Summer Camps:
Northern California
Camp Celiac at Camp Arroyo - Camp registration is now full for both summer 2013 sessions. If you register now you will be on the waiting list for cancellations and still have a chance of going. We do get cancellations. The camp is located in the scenic foothills of Livermore, CA, and is administered by the Celiac Community Foundation of Northern California in a partnership with The Taylor Family Foundation. Each session is five days/four nights and costs only $25 due to the generosity of The Taylor Family Foundation, business sponsors and individual donors. It is open to ages 9-17. Southern California
CDF Camp Gluten-Free at Camp Nawakwa Registration for summer 2013 is open. The camp is located in the beautiful San Bernardino Forest, and is administered by the Celiac Disease Foundation in partnership with Camp Fire. The camp costs $450 (financial aid available) and is open to ages 7-17. Visit the camp's website to learn more and register.

Opportunities to Participate in Celiac Research
Stanford University School of Medicine is conducting government-sponsored studies to improve the understanding of celiac disease, not for profit. For information on participating in the studies, please contact Dr. Arnold Han at ahan2@stanford.edu.
