Gluten-Free Labeling Update
34,000 Petition Signatures and on the Edge of Our Seats
To the extent that we can peer into the big black box that is the U.S. regulatory process, we are encouraged that the gluten-free labeling rule is moving along. The settlement between the Department of Justice and Lesley University may add impetus to the labeling issue (see article below). Until the final rule is published, keep on signing that petition...

U.S. Department of Justice Takes a Stand for Celiac Disease
By Jennifer Iscol
In a significant development for the celiac disease and food allergen communities, the United States Department of Justice signaled that both conditions may constitute disabilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). DOJ Investigation Triggered by Student Complaint The Department of Justice investigated a student complaint received in October 2009 that Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, had failed to make reasonable accommodations to permit students with celiac disease and/or food allergies to fully and equally enjoy the school's food services. The investigation found that the university's policies and practices did not comply with the ADA. The university cooperated with the investigation. to participate in specialized medical training
By Amy Burkhart, MD, RD
A Happy New Year to everyone! The holidays are winding down and 2013 is off to a sunny start here in California. It was an equally beautiful, albeit colder climate, a few weeks ago in Chicago when I had the pleasure of participating in the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center Preceptorship Program
The program is a yearly event coordinated by the center's founder and director, Stefano Guandalini, MD, and his staff. Dr. Guandalini is one of the world's leading experts in celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity. He started the preceptorship seven years ago to educate and update physicians and other health care professionals on celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Read More.

Interesting Tidbits
A seismic realignment in the celiac world on the east coast was announced in December. The Center for Celiac Research (CFCR) headed by Dr. Alessio Fasano, is moving from the University of Maryland to Massachusetts General Hospital. Members of his research, clinical, and administrative team will be joining Dr. Fasano in Boston. Read the press release (posted on the NFCA website). KQED broadcast "Going Gluten-Free" in December, with a panel of celiac experts. Listen to the show or read the article summarizing it.
