Welcome
A message from ACHPER's National Executive Director, Alison Turner
Welcome to all educators, kindred associations and stakeholders with an interest in the Health and Physical Education (HPE) learning area, sport, physical activity, and health and wellbeing outcomes. I hope that all educators are looking forward to some personal time over the Easter and term break, and replenish from what would have been a hectic and full school first term as there has been much action and significant developments in HPE in your schools, state jurisdictions and within the national context.

I would like to take this opportunity to announce that this year's National Health and Physical Education Day will be held on Wednesday September 10. The theme, 'Good for Children, Good for Schools, Good for Communities', will be celebrated over three consecutive years, allowing for ACHPER to generate widespread awareness of the importance of Health and Physical Education as an entitlement for all students, vital for schools nationwide, and with emphasis on the educative value of the HPE learning area for the wider community.

National Health & Physical Education Day
Good for Children, Good for Schools, Good for Communities
This year's National Health and Physical Education Day will be held on Wednesday September 10.

In 2014, National Health and Physical Education Day will focus on how the Health and Physical Education learning area is 'good for children', and develops students' knowledge, understanding and skills to strengthen their sense of self, and build and manage satisfying relationships.

Do we need 'necessary evil' in grass roots sport?
Being a coach in grass roots sport is not an easy task.

In this blog post, Natalie McMaster explains why the person in this role needs to realise that winning tournaments/games is the bonus that comes from ensuring that you have an ethos that has involvement and enjoyment as its foundations.

Active & Healthy Magazine highlight
Tablets: The Physical Education Teacher's Best Resource
Jane McPherson and Andy Hair write about their growing use of technological tools and software to improve their efficiency and effectiveness when teaching Primary School Physical Education.

This encouraging article shares a range of software and approaches including iDoceo (for recording assessments to sports day scores), Coaches Eye (a video analysis tool) and their recent use of Google Forms.

Asia-Pacific Journal of Health, Sport & PE highlight
Game Sense as a model for delivering quality teaching in PE
Light and colleagues describe the capacity for the 'Game Sense' model to provide a framework to lead the delivery of 'quality teaching' outcomes across physical education.

Mapped against the Quality Teaching Frameworks of NSW, these authors describe how the pedagogical principals of the game sense model articulate well with the aspirations of this, and other quality teaching frameworks.
