Welcome to 2014
A Message from ACHPER's National Executive Director, Alison Turner
I would like to welcome all educators, kindred associations and stakeholders with an interest in the Health and Physical Education learning area, sport, physical activity, and student health and wellbeing outcomes to the first issue of the "ACHPER Advocate" for this year.

In 2014, ACHPER National will continue to build on the momentum generated by the 28th ACHPER International Conference held in Melbourne in November 2013. Based on feedback received from the Implementing the Curriculum: Intentions for Action pre-conference forum, delegates from all states, education sectors, schools, and kindred agencies, generated four 'intentions for action': advocacy; professional learning, connections and coherence; and resource development

Speed is critical in any sport, so it makes sense to maximise the speed of your players. In order to know you are on the right track with your speed development you need to continuously monitor your results. As they say, you can't manage what you don't measure!

But timing gates are expensive and hard to set up and stopwatches aren't accurate enough - Right? Not with the Freelap Timing system, with Freelap you can be ready to start timing in seconds!

The easy-to-use, quick to set up, fully automated timing system is designed for a wide variety of training scenarios and can be used in any sport that involves speed training.

Here's what Matt Beckenham, Coach of Mel Breen - Women's 100m Australian record holder has to say:
"I have been using Freelap for the past 12 months with my athletes and it has greatly improved the reliability and consistency of obtaining and tracking training progression. The products are so easy to use."

Teacher The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has made the Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education for Foundation - Year 10 available on the Australian Curriculum website.

It is important to note that at this stage Health and Physical Education has not been endorsed by Ministers as national curriculum. The curriculum however, at the request of the ministerial council, is being made available for states and territories to implement if they wish to do so.

Flinders and La Trobe University Research Project
Seeking Secondary PE Teachers

Flinders and La Trobe University are undertaking a research project exploring secondary physical education teachers' conceptualisation of PE.

Australian HPE teachers' understanding of the nature of their subject is partially constituted by an interpretation about its particular point and purpose. As a result, this research project has three broad objectives: firstly, to explore the "everyday philosophies" of Australian secondary school HPE teachers towards the teaching of physical education (PE); secondly, to investigate how this influences the design and enactment of PE in Years 7-10; and, thirdly, to extend on the Crawford Report's (2009) concerns about both the status of PE within the key learning area of HPE and with the consistency in the application of PE in Australian schools.

Secondary PE teachers are invited to participate in this research via an online survey.
