From the Rector
Christian Formation

Beginning Sunday, September 13th we will again gather for our programs of Christian Formation. A dedicated and energetic group of teachers and volunteers has been working to provide an exciting and rewarding opportunity for all of our young people and adults to grow in their knowledge of the bible, their Church and their faith. Our curriculum is based on the lesson read in our Sunday morning worship, connecting what we learn with what we experience throughout the day.

Saint Paul's is blessed to have people committed to this ministry and to our children. In the service of Holy Baptism we all, parents, God-parents, and all present promise that we will "be responsible for seeing that the child we present is brought up in the Christian faith and life...." These Sunday morning programs are an important step in fulfilling the commitment we have made.

Having our children participate with other committed adults and building relationships with their peers is a gift that will last them a lifetime. Growing in their faith and knowledge of God and His son Jesus is vital as they grow toward adulthood.

We look forward to having you and your children being a part as we grow together.

Parish Office Volunteers
Saint Paul's needs more volunteers (both women and men welcome!) to answer the telephone and greet those who come to the office at Saint Paul's. There are a few openings in our weekly schedule, from either 9 am - 12 noon, or from 12 noon until 3 pm. It's a great way to get to know the Saint Paul's community. We schedule volunteers for only one month at a time, and so this need not be a long-term commitment on your part. Contact Mary Lou Harrold or 706-737-3838  to learn more.
Looking Ahead
Manna Pantry
Friday and Saturday, September 18-19
Manna Pantry is a ministry that provides food to 130 families and individuals throughout the year. Saturday volunteers will greet and check in guests, then fill their boxes as they move them along the tables cafeteria-style. Some volunteers are needed to assist persons by carrying their loaded boxes to their cars.  This is a good ministry for adults, teens, and older children with parents.  For more information contact Anita Tanner or by telephone (706) 993-5720.

Please mark your calendar for the Augusta Ironman 70.3 weekend on Saturday, September 26th and on race day, Sunday, September 27th.  Saint Paul's Church is located next to the starting line of the largest Half-Ironman event in the world.  There are 3,000 triathletes registered for this sellout event!  The race brings athletes and spectators from our own parish, community, country, and from around the world to downtown Augusta and gives our parish the opportunity to demonstrate Christ's love to our guests and give them a warm welcome to our neighborhood.

There are many opportunities for parish members to get involved. Including the following:

  • Volunteering at the Saint Paul's/TriAugusta Pasta Dinner on Saturday, September 26th from 5:30 pm to 8 pm in the River Room.  We will welcome athletes and their families for a delicious home-cooked pasta dinner and provide them with the opportunity to fellowship with each other and our parish on the eve of the race.  Volunteers are needed to assist with food preparation, serving our guests, and cleaning up.
  • Volunteering at the Swim Gear Drop off on Sunday, September 27th from 5:00 am to 8:30 am.  Volunteers will gather at the marina parking lot on race morning and assist athletes who are dropping off a small bag of personal items before they enter the water for the race. Volunteers will also be needed to direct athletes to the starting line Volunteers of all ages and abilities are welcome.   To volunteer please click here.  Choose the Saint Paul's Gear Drop Team from the drop-down box and complete requested information.
  • Volunteering with River Room Hospitality on Sunday, September 27th.
Our doors will open at 5 am and be open throughout the morning to provide athletes a comfortable place to relax before the start of their race and a space for families and spectators who are waiting on their athletes.  Complimentary coffee, water, and light refreshments will be served.  Volunteers are needed to help serve refreshments and to welcome our guests and demonstrate our Saint Paul's hospitality.
  • Saint Paul's cheer station will be set up on Broad Street.  The exact location will be announced closer to race day.  Parishioners are invited to join us after the 11 am service to cheer on the runners as they complete the last leg of their race.  It will be a wonderful time of fellowship and fun!
We look forward to seeing you on race weekend!  It will be an exciting weekend for Saint Paul's and Augusta!  If you have question or would like additional information, please contact Kim Butler or by phone at 706.833.8541.

Leadership Development: What's What?

CDI (Congregational Development Institute)

The program consists of 8 sessions (Friday/Saturday) over two years.  Each session has a combination of lecture and experiential learning.  Between sessions, the participants have projects they complete as part of their experiential learning.

The 8 sessions are divided into two cycles: one on systems and one on culture. The program is designed to provide participants with opportunities to learn and practice leadership skills that can be used in their parishes to engage the congregation in improving and/or implementing ministries in their communities and to help the congregation grow spiritually.

Congregations Experiencing Impact
Several congregations are already seeing the impact of CDI skills and training on its leaders. If you are interested in learning more, please contact:
  • Lonnie Lacy at St. Ann's in Tifton
  • Al Crumpton in Kingsland
  • David Rose in Rincon
  • The Rev. Larry Williams in Cordele
EQHR

This training is in conjunction with the Center for Emotional Intelligence and Human Relations (EQHR). This introductory workshop is designed to improve self-awareness of how one responds in certain situations and the impact our words and actions have on others.  The training consists of both lecture and experiential learning. For more information please visit: www.eqhrcenter.org.

The five-day lab is currently restricted to clergy and selected diocesan staff participation.  It is being offered twice this year and at least once next year.  The next upcoming workshop is scheduled for October.

The Rev. Denise Ronn and Walter Hobgood are the current Diocesan certified EQHR trainers with the EQHR Center.

Conflict Management

This five-day workshop is offered once a year. Like the other workshops offered by the Diocese and CDI, the workshop consists of a combination of lecture and experiential learning.

The skills learned in Conflict Management are essential skills that every clergy person needs to be an effective Rector/Vicar.  Unfortunately, the skills are not taught in most seminaries.  Additionally, the most effective way to learn conflict and emotional intelligence skills are through experiential learning.  Practicing the skills in a safe environment bolsters a successful training opportunity. The trainers currently involved in the Conflict Management course provide such a structure and safe environment for this to occur.

The Rev. Bob Gallagher and Michelle Heyne from Seattle, Washington support the Diocese in training.  Fr. Gallagher is the original designer of the CDI program and has worked with Ms. Heyne to provide training on Conflict Management at several organizations.  The Diocese is currently in the process bringing our training in-house.  The Rev. Walter Hobgood is being trained as a trainer along with the Rev. Becky Rowell. The next course is set for April 2016.
