Last Sunday at Saint Paul's

From the Rector

Beginning this Sunday, January 12, the Adult Forum will begin

a study and discussion of the works of Flannery O'Connor.

Mary Flannery O'Connor (March 25, 1925 - August 3, 1964) was an American writer and essayist and Georgia native. An important voice in American literature, O'Connor wrote two novels and 32 short stories.  She was a Southern writer who often wrote in a Southern Gothic style.  This style includes deeply flawed, disturbing or eccentric characters, ambivalent gender roles and decayed or derelict settings, grotesque situations, and other sinister events relating to or coming from poverty, alienation, racism, crime, and violence. O'Connor's writing also reflected her own Roman Catholic faith, and frequently examined questions of morality and ethics.

Our time with Miss O'Connor with begin with an overview of her life and the events that helped make her one of the most intriguing and powerful southern writers.  We will continue as we discuss one of her most popular and award winning short stories Revelation published in 1964.  Click here for a  link to this short story.

The Adult Forum will meet in the Chapel beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Senior Warden's Report

Senior Warden's Weekly Report to the Parish

Fellow Parishioners:

This is the time of the year when we look back at the previous year to determine how we did, whether we accomplished what we set out to do, and what we need to work on.  This reflection on the previous year is a necessary element in planning for the new year.  It will help us formulate the goals and objectives that we will aspire to in 2014.

In 2013, our Average Sunday Attendance was 234 compared to 196 in 2012.  This represented an 18.9% increase for the year and quite a rebound. Although we don't have comparable numbers for all of 2012, Christian Education attendance is significantly up in all categories during comparable periods in 2013. We definitely have momentum as we enter 2014 in the key areas of participation.

Preliminary results for 2013 show pledge income of $498,000, a 5.3% increase over 2012. This too is encouraging as we enter 2014.

I am pleased to report that, as of today, we have 179 pledges in hand totaling over $581,000.  Although we expect both of these numbers to increase, it is useful to compare these 2014 pledge amounts to the final numbers for 2013.  The $581,000 pledge amount for 2014 represents a 15.7% increase over the 2013 pledge amount of $502,000.  This percentage increase will go up when the final pledges are in.  The 179 pledges for 2014 compares to 170 for 2013, an increase of over 5.0%.  I am optimistic that the increase in the number of pledges will be close to 10.0% when the campaign officially ends.

Our very successful annual campaign will enable us to budget for growth in all of our ministries for the coming year.  We will also be able to address some other pressing needs. Thanks be to God!

Blessings,

Monty
