Project REACH In School Empowerment (RISE)

In July, WFC was awarded funding from Workforce Alliance to provide services to youth who are at risk for truancy or dropping out.  The program will target low income juniors and seniors from Platt and Maloney High Schools in Meriden.

RISE offers intensive case management to enhance students' opportunities for educational success. The program has a host of preventative and support services available to youth enrolled in the program including crisis services, tutoring, study groups, job development, job readiness skill building, educational opportunities, community service and work experience.

The program sponsors two student tours to a CT state college campus. Programming began in late September and runs through the school year.

Nationally Reaccredited

The WFC Dooley Child Development Center has recently been reaccredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

NAEYC's national accreditation system sets professional standards for early childhood education programs, helping families to find high-quality programs for their children.

We prepared for the ongoing reaccreditation process for over a year with training, self-evaluation, and program improvements.  We finished with a program assessment through on-site visitation, classroom portfolios, and a program portfolio.  Assessors evaluated our program for compliance with 10 High Standards for program excellence.

Our program was granted commendations in 8 out of the 10 standards, and we look forward to focusing our future quality improvements on the remaining two standards:  Physical Environment (Building and Physical Design) and our Curriculum related to Science and Social Studies.

Open DOHR Success

With much sacrifice, devotion and determination 35 youth and adults successfully completed and earned certifications in fields of Certified Nurse Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Human and Social Service Worker, Customer Service Worker and Hazardous Waste Operations Technician during the 2012-13 program year. Several have already obtained gainful employment related to their credentials, while others are pursuing advanced post-secondary educational opportunities. With the support of dedicated Open DOHR staff, youth and adults who have not yet obtained employment continue to diligently job search and interview for employment in their training fields. Congratulations to all the ladies and gentlemen for a job well done!

Greetings!

The unprecedented government shutdown weighs heavily. Please join us in our hope that the Powers that Be understand their decisions (and indecisions) have more than theoretical impact, and recognize their judgments affect the lives of clients, friends and family--sometimes, in ways that are life-altering.

With optimism,

Robyn-Jay Bage, M.P.A.

Chief Executive Officer

Thank you to all who attended and supported our annual Hot Dog Heaven.  We had over 240 people join us for
hot dogs and family fun.

 WFC Wellness Room Grand Opening

CEO Robyn-Jay Bage and Tyler Vartenigian of the Health Consultants Group (HCG) cut the ribbon in September, opening the WFC Wellness Room. With generous support and donations from the Health Consultants Group, WFC converted their activity room to a room that now includes two treadmills and stationary cycles, a stair stepper and a Wii Fitness player. Employees can now get fit without the expense of a fitness club. In addition, Laure Welch of the HCG Wellness Team, organized a health screening for the grand opening. The team provided staff with screenings of blood pressure, weight, body mass index and cholesterol. Employees were given tips to improve health and invited to participate in quarterly "challenges" with a chance to win a prize. The kick-off challenge is a Water Challenge that will help employees be aware of the importance of water in their diet. WFC is extremely grateful to Tyler, Laure and HCG for making our Wellness Center a great benefit for our employees.
