Volunteer Award Winner Announced

Mary Lee Di Spirito presented the 2015 ACCA Volunteer Making a Difference Award to Soriya de Lopez on June 7 at Annandale High School.

Soriya de Lopez is the recipient of the 2015 ACCA
Volunteer Making a Difference Award for community service. She received a plaque and a check for $500, in addition to having her name on a permanent plaque at Annandale High School.

Soriya eloquently described the rewards of volunteering in her essay  Exercising My Heart Strings. Her volunteer service includes helping with a gymnastics program for children with special needs, serving as a patient transport volunteer at INOVA Fairfax Hospital, being president of the Annandale High School Just World Interact Club, and helping with various Rotary Club events. She plans to attend Georgetown University with a major in Nursing in the fall.

Ms. Jina Kim of Evergreen Title Company generously sponsors this annual award, which encourages and recognizes volunteer service among young people.

Food Pantry

In May, Food Pantry volunteers made 68 deliveries, serving 205 individuals. As reported last month, the Letter Carriers food drive collected more than 20,000 lbs. of food for the pantry. Thanks to all who participated!

ACCA Donors Respond

Generous donors contributed $1,678 to ACCA during the Do More 24 campaign this month. The United Way of the National Capital Area coordinated the campaign, which raised more than $1.4 million for local charities. We are extremely grateful to those who responded to our request for help to continue serving our neighbors in need.

Come Celebrate Field Day

Mark your calendar! The ACCA Child Development Center (CDC) and the Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions (FACS) are hosting Field Day on July 2, 9:30 -11:45 a.m. at the CDC.

FACS will present a grant from the Earth Day Climate Jam Benefit Concert to ACCA for its environmental education program with children and families, called The Community Garden Project.

The CDC is located at 7200 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA 22003. Please use this link to RSVP for the Field Day Celebration.

Family Emergency Assistance

In May, ACCA responded to local 35 families in need, providing more than $22,700 in emergency assistance for rent, utilities and medical assistance. For example, ACCA paid the past rent due for a single mother of four children who was facing eviction. One of the children has been in the hospital for an extended period of time.

We also enabled a homeless mother with two children to move from a shelter to an apartment by paying an outstanding utility bill. On behalf of all who were served, thank you to our generous donors for making this assistance possible.

Furniture Ministry

The Furniture Program made 26 deliveries and 28 furniture pickups in May. The families served included 11 female heads of the household, 24 families with children under 18-years-old, 1 handicapped person and 1 household with someone over age 55.

If your have gently used furniture that is no longer needed, see the ACCA website for guidelines on the pieces ACCA can recycle to a family in our community. Call 703-256-9513 to arrange a pickup.

Transportation and Meals on Wheels
Volunteers provided 19 rides for six clients in May. Our Meals on Wheels volunteers delivered more than 1,000 meals to 29 clients. Thank you, all!

Cooling Assistance Available

As summer heats up, most of us lower the thermostat. For those who don't have air conditioning or can't afford the bills, Cooling Assistance may be available. If a household is found eligible, the program can provide:

1) Up to $200 toward payment of electric bills

2) Repairs to air conditioning equipment, or

3) Payment for a window air conditioner or fan for households with no A/C.

In addition to meeting the income eligibility requirements, the household must also contain at least one of the following: a person 60 years of age or older, a child under 6, or someone that has been determined disabled for Medicaid or Social Security. If you know someone who could benefit from this assistance, additional information and application forms are available online.
