Day of Service Fills Pantry Shelves
 | A volunteer collects groceries for the ACCA Food Pantry donated by shoppers at the Annandale Giant on September 21. |
More than 424 bags of groceries and $300 in cash were collected at five area supermarkets on Saturday, September 21 as part of a tri-state Day of Service. A week later, on September 28, participants in a 3K walk donated 246 more bags of groceries.
ACCA is very grateful to Mr. Richard Magleby of the Annandale Ward of the Latter Day Saints for coordinating the food drives, to all the volunteers who helped, and to youth from the Annandale Ward, Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church and members of Calvary Church who stocked the shelves at the Pantry. Thanks to the Annandale Giant and Safeway stores, Loehmann's Plaza Giant, Ravensworth Safeway and Landmark Shoppers Food for allowing us to conduct the food drive at their stores.
In September, the Food Pantry volunteers made 50 deliveries assisting 187 individuals.

Child Development Center Scores 4 Stars
Congratulations to the staff of the ACCA Child Development Center (CDC) which received a 4-Star rating from the Virginia Star Quality Initiative (VSQI). The CDC is one of the few centers in Northern Virginia to have achieved this rating.
The VSQI was created to help parents and caregivers find high quality child care throughout Virginia. Participation is voluntary, and programs are measured on factors such as staff qualifications, how teachers interact with the children, classroom size, classroom materials, and how well they prepare children for school. Well done!
Thank you to Frontier Landscaping for donating $3,600 in labor costs to complete work at the front of the CDC building.

Emergency Financial Assistance
ACCA provided more than $28,000 in cash assistance to 58 households in September for rent, utilities, and other needs. Among those served was a father with three teenage children whose wife recently passed away. Due to medical and funeral expenses, he was unable to pay the rent. In another instance, a couple with two children both worked for the same employer and both were laid off at the same time. ACCA also helped this family by paying the outstanding rent. On behalf of these families and others, thank you for your generosity to ACCA.

Furniture Ministry
 | Volunteers load donated furniture for delivery to needy families.
|
Volunteers from nine ACCA congregations picked up gently used furniture and made deliveries to 36 households in September. Of these, 34 included children under the age of 18. Thank you to volunteers from Latter Day Saints, Peace Lutheran, Providence Presbyterian, John Calvin Presbyterian, St. Alban's, Annandale United and Immanuel Methodist, St. Barnabas's, and Cornerstone Evangelical.

Meals on Wheels and Transportation
Meals on Wheels served 24 individuals in September. Each delivery included a hot meal and a cold sack supper, for a total of 768 meals.
Currently there is a need for drivers in the Bailey's Crossroads area. If you can sign up for one or more days per month, please contact Mary Lee Di Spirito at (703) 256-9513 or ddmld@verizon.net. Drivers pick up meals at the Baileys Shelter and deliver them to home bound seniors in the neighborhood.
We also need a program coordinator for the Annandale Meals on Wheels program. The coordinator takes referrals for new clients coming on the program, places orders with the food caterer, prepares route sheets for the drivers who make the deliveries, and oversees the operation of the program. Please contact Mary Lee Di Spirito if you can help.
ACCA volunteers also provided 19 rides to medical appointments in September.
