Day to Serve: Combating Hunger

day to serve On Saturday, September 21, various ACCA churches will be conducting food drives at local supermarkets to benefit the ACCA Food Pantry, in response to Virginia Governor McDonnell's call to citizens and organizations to participate in a Day to Serve. Among the stores participating will be the Annandale Giant, Annandale Safeway, Landmark Plaza Shoppers, Loehman's Plaza Giant, and Revensworth Safeway. Please be generous with your food donations!

Volunteers are needed at the various locations to pass out flyers with a list of items needed by the Pantry and to collect donations from shoppers exiting the stores. This is a great service project for scouts and other youth needing service hours. For more information, contact Richard Magleby, (703) 354-8123, or rsmagleby@verizon.net.

In addition to the food drive, Day to Serve activities include a 3K Walk to Combat Hunger on September 28 at Robinson High School and a free benefit concert featuring Grammy nominee and renowned violinist Jenny Oaks Baker on Sunday, September 29 at Fairfax high School Auditorium. Click the links provided for more information on these events.

Wanted: Meals on Wheels Coordinator

help wanted ACCA urgently needs a new coordinator for the Annandale Meals on Wheels program. Peg Frank, who has ably coordinated this program for so many years, has health problems requiring that she step down. If you are looking for a new way to serve or greater involvement with the home-bound elderly who need your help, this could be the opportunity you seek.

The coordinator takes referrals for new clients coming on the program, places orders with the food caterer, prepares route sheets for the drivers who make the deliveries, and oversees the operation of the program.  It is an affiliate of Meals on Wheels of Eastern Fairfax with ACCA supplying the administrative personnel to keep the meals program running smoothly.

Please send information about candidates to Mary Lee Di Spirito at ddmld@verizon.net or (703) 256-9513. Mentoring support will be available for the new program coordinator.

Annandale CROP Hunger Walk

CROP Hunger Walk The annual CROP Hunger Walk to benefit Church World Service takes place on October 19 at 8 a.m. at Lake Accotink Park, near the marina. Join fellow walkers for a healthy 10K walk while raising money to combat hunger and support refugee relief, including refugees fleeing Syria. A poster contest for children through grade 12 raises awareness about hunger. For more information and materials about the walk or poster contest, contact Camille Mittelholtz at (703) 573-0074 or kcmittelholtz@gmail.com. A portion of the proceeds will benefit ACCA's programs to fight hunger and poverty.

Emergency Financial Assistance
broken leg In July and August, ACCA served 60 households providing emergency financial assistance for rent, utilities and other necessary expenses. Among those served was a family of four in which the father was between jobs and though his wife works, they were unable to meet the rent. In another case, a client suffered a work-related accident in which he lost an extremity. He was unable to return home following surgery, and instead moved to a shelter. ACCA paid storage fees while he was living at the shelter. In these and many other ways, ACCA served the needs of the vulnerable in our community.

Furniture Ministry

truck All four trucks are back on line following inspections and repairs during August.

At its August annual review and planning meeting, representatives of the participating churches and organizations learned that over the past 14 years, the ACCA Furniture Ministry has completed nearly 10,000 furniture pickups and deliveries, serving 4,685 needy households. This represents more than 18,000 needy individuals whose lives have been significantly impacted.

Our 182 individual volunteers provided nearly 5,000 hours of work during FY 2013, completing 652 pickups and deliveries during the 40 weeks of operations. Way to go!

Food Pantry

groceries In July the pantry made 53 deliveries assisting 150 individuals.  In August there were 69 deliveries assisting 199 individuals.  The pantry also helped Bailey's Shelter, Immanuel Food Bank, Providence Food Bank, the Bailey Elementary School and the Reston Family Shelter.

Transportation and Meals on Wheels

Volunteers provided 48 rides to medical and other appointments in July and August.

Meals on Wheels volunteers delivered meals to 26 persons in July and to 24 persons in August. Each delivery consisted of 2 meals.
