Wrightsville Beach, N.C. - Elite North Carolina Surf to Sound Challenge Champions Kate Lewis (2011) of New Bern, and Larry Cain (2011-12) of Canada, return to Wrightsville Beach for fall-season competition this weekend. Joining the champs are contenders from South Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, the Virgin Islands, and paddleboarders spanning the state of North Carolina.

Jarrod Covington, named 2013 All Waterman by WBLA, will serve as race director for NC Surf to Sound Challenge and the East Coast Paddle Surf Championship, Nov. 15-17, at Blockade Runner Beach Resort.

"We are excited about Surf to Sound Challenge and the Paddle Surf Championship because of the perfect paddling weather Wrightsville Beach has this time of year," says Covington. "Conditions are usually good with warm water and brisk, refreshing air temperatures."

Top SUP and watersports vendors will be on site Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. till 6 p.m. for the Waterman Expo. Demos for the public will be provided by major board and paddle companies including Naish, Kialoa Paddles, Surftech and Hobie.

The North Carolina Surf to Sound Challenge, a Series Event sanctioned by the World Paddle Association, features a 6.5-mile elite ocean course, an intermediate 4-mile harbor loop in Banks Channel, prone division categories in both races, and a free Kid's Race for ages 12 and younger.

Following Saturday's races, Olympic Gold Medalist and two-time elite champion Larry Cain will offer an SUP clinic focused on training technique (drills, using resistance, technique workouts) and race skills, preparation and strategy. The clinic is open to the public with on-line registration.

New this year is the East Coast Paddle Surf Championship on Sunday, Nov. 17. Jo Pickett, recently appointed women's coach for the 2014 Eastern Surfing Association All-Star Team, will coordinate judging.

Blockade Runner Beach Resort, celebrating 50 years, is home of the North Carolina Surf to Sound Challenge.

Proceeds benefit Friends of the Reserve, Masonboro Island.
