President's Message
Greetings from our new president, Chris Mosby
Chris Mosby
Chris Mosby
"With great power comes great responsibility."

I've always wanted to start a column with that line. For the uninitiated, and those who have blissfully lived beneath stones, that quote comes from Ben Parker, the ill-fated uncle of Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man. It becomes a mantra for Peter, a reminder that while the world may bestow awesome blessings upon an individual, it often expects amazing things in return. And it's not just a way for me to shoehorn a Spider-Man reference into my first column. It's also a strong reminder of the power journalists wield with their words. An important mantra for us Northeast Ohioans, right now.

Cleveland is having a moment. The Cavaliers captured the Larry O'Brien trophy, brought a gloriously messy parade through Euclid and finally helped our beleaguered town shed some of its Mistake by the Lake stigma. Now, as we find ourselves in the throes of our most recent brush with the spotlight, the RNC, it's important to remember our role as journalists. These days will bring controversy, conflict and the flare of a national audience. We must remember to comport ourselves with class as citizens and work diligently as professionals. If you find yourself struggling with ethical issues or simply need advice, the Cleveland chapter of SPJ is happy and eager to pitch in. We're here to aid your efforts and it's an important time to remember the sheer audience you could be reaching. You have more power than ever, use it responsibly.

I'd also like to take a brief moment to welcome our new board members. They bring a variety of experience and backgrounds to the board. They will help drive programming, outreach and the ultimate vision of our chapter, hopefully for years to come. The new board members, whose full bios and photos are on our chapter website, are:
  • David Campbell, sports manager for cleveland.com
  • Michelle Simakis, editor with GIE Media
  • Jackie Mitchell, editor with ScripType Publishing
  • Joe Ginley, sports broadcaster and St. Ignatius High School's sports information director
Finally, I would be remiss not to thank Kaye Spector for her wonderful work as President of our chapter. Kaye is now serving as the Immediate Past President on our board and will make sure I don't pilot us too far off the rails. Her leadership and guidance have helped the chapter immensely over the last year and she deserves many thanks from me, our board, and our chapter.

Until next time, true believers, this has been your friendly neighborhood SPJ President,
Chris Mosby
Tips for those covering the RNC

A great deal of helpful advice was shared by both attorneys and journalists at our June 22 event, "Preparing for the RNC: Your Right to Record Events in Public." Organized by the Society of Professional Journalists, SDX Foundation, the National Press  Photographers Association and the Reporters Committee on Freedom of the Press, the event was not well attended because it was on the same day as the victory parade of the Cleveland Cavaliers, which tied up traffic and public transit. So only 20 of the 70 people who had signed up were able to get there.

SPJ student member Julie Hullett and SPJ Cleveland Vice-President Carrie Buchanan live tweeted from the event and produced a Storify version of their tweets with the headline "Keep the legal hotline number handy during RNC, expert panel advises photojournalists." It is available at the link below. May it prove helpful to those covering this week's events, both inside and outside.
